While I was single I could post something here every week, and now it´s already been two months since I last posted something here. Like a lot of people I am moving away from blogging and am now mainly using Facebook and Instagram to keep in touch with our friends and family.
Does this mean that I will stop the blog? I don´t know yet, but probably in some years.

Another thing that we have started doing is making monthly video-updates for our family, and here is the one for the month of May. It´s just me (and a little bit of Liv Elise) this time, enjoy:

Mot Målet #2 2018

Yes, so we got another issue of Mot Målet out. This issue´s theme-section is about identity. And it´s an important topic to be aware about.

Bible pictures

In the video you can see some of the bible pictures that I had to redraw. But besides those I have also been drawing new pictures. The ones over here are «crucify» and «jealousy». Each word that has to be drawn has a definition given to it, which really helps with a difficult word like jealousy. The definition given with that word was: The desire to keep a relationship pure.
I´ve never thought of jealousy in that way, I´ve always thought it was about you wanting something not to happen, rather then wanting to keep something the way it is. So, in the process I get to learn a lot too.
It´s honouring to think that I get to contribute to the translation of the bible into languages that don´t have a bible. That my drawings will be a small help for those who work with the translations.

Hello again, here a little quick update about how we have been doing in the last months. We have moved house, inside the Grimerud-property. We used to have the apartment on the second floor of the main building, which was very cozy, but a bit impractical for a family of four.
At a missions base like Grimerud there are always people coming and going. People come here to train others for missions, or get training themselves. People leave when we send them out as missionaries, or they become involved somewhere else in society.
With all that moving, this new place became available, so we moved there a few weeks ago. We are definitely happy about our new place.

Mot Målet 1 2018

This year´s first issue of Mot Målet has been out for a month already, but I still wanted to show it to you. The theme of this publication was about sexual harassment and the #metoo campaign.

30 days of prayer in 2018

Another thing I´ve been working on is this year´s booklet for the 30 days of prayer campaign for the Muslim world. Like last year, we will be praying for muslims during the coming time of Ramadan. The Norwegian version of this booklet is a cooperation between many missions organisations in Norway like Open Doors, Wycliffe, Frontiers, YWAM and NLM.
The Norwegain prayer-guide can be found here at www.30dagersbonn.no, prayer guides in other languages can be found at the international site.
And just as last year, I will also be involved with the social media for this project.
Visa and financial situation

The visas for the girls still have not come, even though we applied more than a year ago. Please keep praying for these things to be resolved quickly. Our financial situation has been challenging in the last months. But as we have worked with is both in prayer and by contacting people, our situation has fortunately gotten much better. We are so blessed.
I´ll hopefully post another update soon, and show some more of our new place.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com0Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.440250699999993 -30.172754999999967 77.054085699999987 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-50331256199483523222018-02-17T23:04:00.001+01:002018-02-17T23:04:45.630+01:00Video updates + Our place in YWAM Norway

YWAM as an apostolic movement, and our roles in this movement.

It´s been more than a month since the last issue of Mot Målet has gotten to it´s subscribers. The theme of this issue was "the apostolic ministry", where we touched upon what it means for us in YWAM to be an apostolic movement.
Simply put, an apostle is a missionary, someone who is sent out with a message (in Dutch we use the word "zendeling"). In Ephesians 4 in the Bible, the apostles (missionaries) are one of five kinds of ministries that God gives to build his church.
If the fivefold ministry gifting from Ephesians 4 are compared to the five fingers of a hand, then the apostle is the thumb. The same way the thumb touches on the other four fingers, an apostle helps and enables the other people in the church to do their thing. Often without being especially good at the things it is helping the others with.

The apostolic nature of our missions movement is clearly visible in our DTSes, our typical short-term missions projects and our commitment to believe in young people as missionaries. People come here for a short period to be equipped, and are then sent to where God has called them.

Now I want to give a few sentences how this whole apostolic thing applies to our family.
Marina and me don´t work with these typical apostolic things, training and sending out young people. Rather, we support and facilitate for others to do this work. Marina has ran the kitchen so there is food for everyone on the training programs. I´m working with design and communication so we are able to let more people know about the possibilities to come here to do missions training with YWAM in Norway. Not everyone is supposed to be a missionary, but we´re all called to be involved in missions.

Our two girls

We are very thankful that our little girl is growing really well. She is four months now, and has reached two milestones; rolling over from back to belly and eating solids (smushed pears). She has also started to sleep in Ana´s room during the night.
Ana is also doing very well, she enjoys school so much that she keeps setting up her own classrooms and lesson plans at home. A few days ago was obligatory skiing-day at her school. Something that was all new for both me and Marina, luckily there are many people in our community that can help us make sure Ana had all the right things for ski-day. Skis waxed and all.

Ministry in 2017

It certainly has been a good year for us, firstly because our dear daughter and sister Liv Elise was born, but we can also look back on good work in missions this year. I want to name three of my favourite things of the past year:

In the spring I started to put together a manual for how we make Mot Målet. Even though I have been making this magazine for a long time, I still thought it would be helpful to put all the how-to´s of magazine making into one file. It ended up to be much bigger than I thought it would be, especially because it also involves a website and social media.
In the end it was a very helpful document to have for myself and to share with others that help out with making the magazine.

I´ve had an "mission builder" work with me right at the time that Liv Elise was born. A mission-builder is someone who volunteers short-term to “lift up the arms” of frontline missionaries through practical, hands-on service. Elise, the mission builder, worked with hospitality and graphic design while she was here. She was able to take over a lot of my work for Mot Målet so I could be with my family.
If being a mission builder sounds interesting to you, and you would like to serve missions anywhere in the world with your skills, please have a look at www.missionbuilders.org

Since the time we were in England for Marina´s TESOL course, I have been putting my own expertise in illustration to good use for front-line missions by making illustrations for Wycliffe Bible translators. I have contributed to a database of thousands of images depicting words used in the text of the bible. These images are used as a visual reference for national translators to translate the bible into their own language. When people can read God´s word in their own language, it becomes a God´s message for them.
It´s nice to work with communication in Norway, it´s much more valuable to me to be able to do something for peoples that don´t have any bibles at all. See more about Wycliffe´s projects here.

These are the latest four images I have drawn for Wycliffe, Marina was happy to pose for these pictures.

She is here

Two weeks ago, on the 16th of October at 06:06 our sweet little Liv Elise was born at the hospital in Elverum. At birth she weighed 3740 grams, and was 53 cm tall. So far we have come to know her as a quiet baby that sleeps a lot, drinks well and cries little. Ana is really proud to be a big sister, and keeps telling everyone about the baby in our family.
My parents have been here since the beginning of last week, and have been a great help with all kinds of small things around the house, or spending time with Ana when Liv Elise needs our attention. This weekend, also Marina´s brother and his girlfriend have been visit, all the way from Brazil.

Her name

Once we knew our baby was going to be a girl we started thinking and praying about what her name was going to be. Me and Marina have some differences in how we want to decide and process things, but in the end we are really happy that we can call our girl Liv Elise.
«Liv» is originally a very old norse word, which meant refuge. In today´s Norwegian, it is the word for life. «Willem», which is in my name also means protector or protection.
The name «Elise» came out of our time in praying for our girl while Marina still was pregnant, it means dedicated to God. As parents, we want her life to be dedicated to God, and will raise her with that purpose.
She has both our last names, which is normal in Brazil. And in this way she will share a last name with Ana, who does not have my last name.
Work and visas

Marina is with maternity leave now, and there are others that are taking over her responsibilities as the kitchen manager. I have been able to be with my family all this time since our little girl was born, but soon we have to start working on the next issue of Mot Målet. I had not posted about the newest issue yet, but that one is available at www.motmalet.no
We are still waiting for the visas for both girls, we should have gotten an answer for more than a month ago, but it seems that they still have not started looking at our case yet. Please keep praying that the visas of the girls will come through soon.

While I am at home with the family, I do have some time here and there to keep drawing bible-images for Wycliffe Associates work to speed up bible translations into all the remaining languages that do not yet have a bible.
We have heard very good reports from the work where the images have been used alongside bible-translation in different countries in Asia this summer. Here are some of the recent images I have drawn (Winepress, Wineskin and Unleavened Bread):
It´s like advent

Marina is past the 32nd week of her pregnancy, and the due date for the baby (19th of October) is coming closer. We are preparing our house, and pretty much the rest of our life, for the arrival of our baby girl. For me who has never had a daughter born, the whole time of preparation made me think of advent (the Norwegian version). We buy a lot of things (even a car), people give us things (lots of newborn-baby clothes, thanks everyone) and move our stuff around in the house and decorate the baby corner. It´s like advent, we´re anticipating the birth of a child. Our child.
Both Marina and the little girl that is growing in the belly are very healthy and active.

The family car

Yes, we suddenly, and finally have our own car. It´s a Zafira. It´s a very nice family car, with a lot of space for Ana´s car seat, and soon for the baby seat and stroller. Another family that has been living at Grimerud for the last four years needed to sell their car, because they are going to the middle east as missionaries. We were able to finalize the purchase and the paperwork just in the last days before they left. We will be able to pay for the car with the money we will receive because of the baby.

Waiting for visas

I have not mentioned this on the blog before, but we are in the process of applying for a family-reunification visa for the girls. They have used up their four years as volunteer workers here in Norway, and for us as a family to be able to stay in this country we needed another visa. We have sent in the application already before we went to England. With a processing time of half a year, we hope to get the visa before the baby is born. It´s a bit of a tricky and unusual visa situation, but all families we know that have applied in similar situations have gotten their visa´s granted. Please pray for us about this.
TESOL in transit

We´ve come back at the beginning of June, and we are very happy to be back in our own home. Our own beds, our own kitchen our own bathroom. And especially all the people here at Grimerud.
We plan to be at Grimerud this summer, where we will work practically with some events. We don´t have plans to go any places on vacation.
Now that we have completed the TESOL in England, we want to go on and offer english-teacher training in Norway as well. What this is going to look like, and how we are going to do this is still something we are trying to figure out.

Big school for Ana

The day after we came back we visited the school that Ana is going to go to after the summer. It´s going to be a big class with 19 kids. The school is called Hedemarken Friskole. The school is half an hour away from where we live. YWAMers started this private christian school 25 years ago, and in it´s time it was the first private school in the country. Most families that live at Grimerud have kids that go to this school. About half of Ana class are kids she knows from the preschool here at Grimerud.
After having gone to a public school in England, we see that Ana is very ready for big school.

The baby

The second day after we came back we had an appointment with the midwife. Our baby is very healthy and active, and everything seems to be okay. At the first appointment we couldn´t see the gender yet, because the umbilical cord was in the way. At the second appointment, the midwife was as sure as she could be that our growing baby is a girl. Watch the video below to see Ana´s reaction to the big news.

Burning Bright

Just this week, we had a little party with «Burning Bright», the children´s dance-group we started last winter. Since the seven months we started the group, many kids have joined us. We have been able to do three projects in this time, with different dances for each project. Towards the end, the oldest kids even made their own group where they themselves prepare some parts of our weekly rehearsals.
It´s great to see the little and the big kids grow in confidence of expressing themselves, even on stage in front of a lot of people.

What I do

Besides the practical work here at the base, I am hoping to do a few dozen more illustrations for Wycliffe. Their project-deadline is in July, and it looks like that me and the other artists will be able to finish off some 300 key-words. Besides that, the summer is typically the time of the year to catch up on unfinished projects.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com1Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.44008569999999 -30.172754999999967 77.054250699999983 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-51979256193763248322017-05-20T14:08:00.003+02:002017-05-20T14:08:39.322+02:00TESOL England: Almost done already

Finishing the TESOL

Our stay in England has felt like it has gone really fast, we´ve had very long days with the TESOL-course and everything. But it´s all been very good, but we´re looking forward to come home again to Norway. Marina has been having good results on her course, and is always very happy to be teaching English again.

Ana has been having a good time at school, even though it is all so different from what she has been used with in Norway. She is happy to have made new friends, and have new teachers.
But the thing that really motivates her is reading books. When I pick her up from school at the end of the day, the first thing she does it to show me the new book the school sends home for us to read.

Once Ana is in school I´ve had the time to make more illustrations for Wycliffe´s list of keywords for bible translation. More on my tumblr-blog.
For YWAM Norway, our second issue of Mot Målet got moved to the summer, so I don´t have to stress with that now.

TESOL

We´ve been here for a little more than one week, and it has taken us some time to get settled and into our new routine. Marina has started the TESOL-course, and Ana has been going to one of the public schools in the town.
Marina her class is quite small, only three students and two staff. But she´s very happy to be able to be here. As part of her course, Marina will be teaching English on the ECO-course (English Cultural Orientation), which is a course where people learn English. People take this course either before their DTS, or before joining a missions team where English is the team language.
The ECO-class that Marina will be teaching has six Brazilians and one Chilean, which is nice.

We´ve already made really good friends with one of the Brazilian families that is here for ECO-course. They have two girls that are around the same age as Ana. Marina will be giving classes together with the mother. And I hang out with the dad, he helps me with my Portuguese, while I help him with his English. And we talk about bicycles.
Wood End School

We see it as a miracle from God that Ana has gotten a place at one of the public schools in town. We had been a bit anxious about how the whole transition would be. The British school-system is quite different from the Norwegian YWAM-preschool that she is used with. But she is happy to go to school, and takes in all the new thing quite well, the uniform, the homework. The school is a little more than a mile away. So, with a borrowed bike I bring her to school in the morning, and pick her up at the end of the day. We feel so blessed with all the people have helped us getting started here.

What I do

In the first week I have been helping the girls getting started with their schools and schedules. I´m happy to be able to support my girls in this way. As a husband and parent, I want to make sure they can get the best out their time here.
Besides all the organising, I have started to contribute to an illustration-project for Wycliffe Bible Translators. Of the total of 6887 languages in the world, 3287 do not yet have a bible-translation. To speed up the global bible-translation work, they have asked artists to illustrate a few thousand key-words. The words that are the most important to bible translation. They hope to get all the drawings in by the end of this year, collect them and put them all in a kit that the translator can use to speed up their work of bible translation.
I am really excited to be able to be part of this project. Imagine that in our lifetime (perhaps only five years from now), there will be a bible in every language on earth.
I´ll be posting my illustrations for Wycliffe in my tumblr-blog.

Whoohoo, we´re excited to tell that we´re expecting a baby in October! Just some days before my birthday. We had found out ourselves just before we were in the Netherlands for my sister´s wedding.
Marina and the baby are doing good. We have visited her doctor and the midwife here in Norway, we already got to hear the baby´s heart beat. Despite it being so early in the pregnancy.

Bit by bit we are preparing for the new member of our family, and the small apartment we have is filling up with clothes and other things that our generous friend have donated to us. But all of that will have to wait for another six weeks, as we are travelling to England tomorrow. Then at the end of May we will be back in Norway.

Burning Bright

Just last week we were at the local refugee-centre with the dance and drama-group we started half a year ago. It´s a dance group for young children, inspired on what is internationally known as King´s Kids. We´ve named our group Burning Bright.
Our group has twice perfomed simple dances and dramas during the dig dinners that we at Grimerud organise for the refugees, and twice our group has performed at a local church.
But over the weekend we took contact with the board of the refugee-place, and to our surprise they allowed us to have our Gospel-presentation now on Tuesday. After the presentation we had an easter-egg hunt outside with the refugee-kids.

Alright, that was the news for now. We are flying to England early in the morning tomorrow. In the next post I´ll share with you our first impressions of the place.

Happy Easter everybody!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com0Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.440254199999991 -30.172754999999967 77.054082199999982 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-37038858984626733772017-03-22T19:27:00.001+01:002017-03-22T19:33:24.860+01:00Back to England, with my family this time

What Marina is going to be doing

The tickets have been bought, it´s real. We are going to be in England from the 14th of April til the 30th of May. Marina has been accepted for the TESOL-course that we have been applying for since the end og last year. It´s going to be an exciting time for our family to be on a training-trip together for this one and a half month. It´s a little crazy to think that we have not been married for half a year, and we´re already travelling out together. Quite the YWAM missionary family.

TESOL is not just a YWAM-thing, it´s a internationally recognised method to train non-english speakers in speaking english (Wikipedia link). But english-teaching is in high demand in non-english speaking countries, as knowing english will potentially give people many more opportunities and advantages. Many of our missionary friends in the Middle-East and Central Asia have been involved with TESOL-training. It´s a great tool in missions to reach people.

Marina has for many years felt that God has been leading her to be a missionary by using english-teaching. The bible-passage that has been very central for her was from Ezekiel 3, where God calls the prophet that his mission is "not to people of a strange language".

What me and Ana are going to be doing

Ana will not be able to join an English public school while we are there. The application process is just impossible. So, our six-year old will hopefully be happy to mostly be with Marina in the classroom, and sometimes with me at the place where we are going to stay. There are several schools for Ana only a mile away, and I (as a Dutch dad) had been really looking forward to bicycling her to school and back every day, but that´s just not going to be working out. For most of the time I will be quite busy with the next issue of YWAM Norway´s magazine. Doing all the layout from across the North Sea.
It´s not the first time that we´re working this way, with me not being in Norway. It´s been done before two years ago, and I also was in England at that time. I was in London at that time for the Arts Internship.

Thank you to everyone that has been praying together with us in this step of our journey as a missionary-family. We really appreciate your prayers and support.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com0Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.440253199999987 -30.172754999999967 77.0540832 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-66785062132073436582017-03-03T09:00:00.001+01:002017-03-03T09:01:52.771+01:00We started our year with parties and big plans

Ana´s Party

Hello again, it´s March already and we´ve been very busy with a lot of things, above here is a picture we took on Ana´s birthday. On the lawn outside where we live some people had made an amazing igloo.
For her birthday Ana had invited a good dozen of her friends, and we had two very busy hours with food, presents and crafts.
At the beginning of the year, when we started to ask Ana about what theme she wanted to have for her party she said she wanted a Bible-story party. Which was pretty good, considering that she wanted a Troll-themed party the year before. Marina found a bible-story series
that was written especially for girls of Ana´s age. It´s called Bible Belles.
Seeing her at her birthday this year made me think back of how she was on that day last year. And it has been so clear how much she has grown in her fifth year. I feel very privileged to be the one to parent her together with Marina.
Annemarie´s party

My sister´s wedding was the week before Ana´s birthday, and we were very happy to all be in the Netherlands for one week. Because I am living abroad, I don´t get to see my siblings as much as I would like. Especially not my little sister, who now lives in Ireland.

Plans for England (TESOL)

In my last post I mentioned that we are hoping to be involved with translating YWAM´s sourceview bible-app into Norwegian. This project won´t start until after the summer, and even then we are not certain how we will be able to contribute. But getting people excited about the bible is always good. Another bible related thing that we are going to be involved in the next few years is that we are going to offer a bible to each house in Hedmark (the county we live in).

YWAM Harpenden, here is where we plan to be for six weeks
in April and May of this year.

Another plan of ours, is that we have applied to be part of a TESOL-course. TESOL stands for Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages, and aims to train people to teach english. Marina has worked as an english teacher in Brazil for years before her and Ana came to Norway. Now she wants to use her love for languages to reach the people that don´t know Jesus yet. In many countries (and especially in the middle east) extra english classes are much sought after, so working as an english teacher is a good way for many young christians to come in contact with people, that would otherwise be difficult as a "regular" missionary. Then after taking this course in England this year, we plan to be teaching the same course in Norway at Grimerud the year after.
The TESOL-course takes only six weeks, and we would go the YWAM-base in Harpenden with the whole family. Ana should be able to join school there, and I will work with Mot Målet from there.

Mot Målet (which I am not going to stop talking about)

It looks like it´s going to be a big year for our magazine. We (not me) got to dig into a big list of subscribers that we had lost contact with. And from working with that list we managed to gain back as many that we are now well over 10.000 subscribers. And that´s a really good number.
And while someone else has been doing that amazing job, I have been making a new website for our magazine. It was actually the first time that I designed a website. The new website should make it easier for our readers to read and share the articles online.
Mot Målet 4 of 2016

First of all, here is the latest issue of YWAM Norway magazine (click on the image above). Last year´s last issue. This time, the theme has been «Hearing God´s voice», and we got a lot of good responses on the issue, so that was really nice. Besides doing the layout for the magazine I also wrote a short post as the editor. Here is the english translation:

The first time I heard God´s voice he spoke about missions. I was in Iceland, standing on the roof of a barn. For the last days I had been scraping the weathered paint off the old planks of the outer wall. I had taken a gap-year to adventure around Iceland. And now I was thinking about expanding my gap-year into a lifestyle of travel and experiences.
A thought struck me where I was standing on that roof in Iceland. «If I could do this for myself, then I can also do it for God.» It came as a challenge, and hit me with conviction. At the same time, I also felt that God gave me the freedom to choose what I wanted to do with what he had just spoken.
I took the challenge and got myself ready to take a DTS in Norway the year after.

Twelve year has passed since that summer day. «Hearing from God» has today become a pretty normal thing for me and my family. Something so precious that I would not want to let go, or go without it.

In this issue of Mot Målet you can read how we continue with fulfilling what God has called us to do. We train young people for missions, contribute to (literally) give God´s word to the people of Norway. We send missions-team to the foreign places in the world, and with hospitality we meet the foreigners that have come to us.
God has given us a big job to do, and with our own eyes we can see it developed and fulfilled step by step. It give us great joy and thankfulness when we for ourselves can see how God´s kingdom is growing.

In March I will be working on the next issue of our magazine. In the meantime, I am slowly getting more into digital publishing (finally). The online issue of the magazine is over at www.motmalet.no

Bible apps in Norwegian

At the beginning of the year we had the annual YWAM Norway staff conference again, and that was really busy and good. We were 400 people here at Grimerud. We had some really cool talks with a lot of people, but for now I will just mention one of them. YWAM international has developed a bible reading app which allows you to read the text as a story told. It shows who is talking to who, how much each person says, and the things each of these persons talk about. It is the same bible, but the way you read it engages you more into the biblical narrative. See sourceviewbible.com for more info about this app.
As a goal for this year, YWAM Norway is hoping to translate this app to Norwegian, so we have an engaging bible-app that we can present when we continue handing out bibles door to door in the rest of the country. This is a project that I hope I can be involved with.

Missions training

After the staff-conference, I was part of leading a missions training course for 22 students at the Nordland-DTS. This is the same Kairos-course that I had taken in November last year. Classroom teaching and leading small-groups aren´t things I do often, and I wanted to step out about practice both. At the same time, I got to learn understand more about missions, and God´s heart for all the people´s of this earth.

A family visit

Next month, we will be in The Netherlands for one week, from the 14th til the 21st. My sister Annemarie is getting married to Donál on the 18th. He is Irish, and they met in Ireland where she has been living for some years now. We are excited about being at their wedding, and meeting all of our new family.
Hey everyone, we want to wish you a very merry Christmas!

We are so overly happy that we are now spending the holidays together as one family. It´s the first time we have our own Christmas tree, build our own «pepperkakehus» (gingerbread-house), lighted our own advent candles and a few things more.
We also continued an advent tradition that we started when we were still dating. Last year we did an advent devotional for which I drew one illustration every day. Those illustrations have now become and important part of the decorations for our Christmas tree. Every evening we have coloured one of the drawings and read the devotional together.
On Christmas-eve we first went to «The Mercy house», where Marina volunteers on Thursdays. Here we sang carols and told the story of Jesus birth to a small group of refugees that had come for the celebration. At the end of the program we handed out gifts to them.
Two of the refugees came with us to Grimerud with us and spent the rest of the evening here.
We are looking forward to some days of rest now, until the next big Grimerud-events start. Then in the new year I will make a little change in my work, and become part of the book-publishing team Proklamedia that YWAM Norway has. I´m will still be making the YWAM-Norway magazine, but at the times that I am not working with that, I´ll be involved with the publishing team.

Financially we have been able to come through the year. Being full-time volunteers that depend on gifts and sponsoring for their finances is still a challenge. But just like the last ten year, it has worked out this year too.
For me, it has also been the first full year that I have been tithing off all the money that has come in.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com0Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.450460699999994 -30.172754999999967 77.043875699999987 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-62840056466932958732016-12-22T12:12:00.000+01:002016-12-22T12:16:26.506+01:00LTS at GrimerudWhoa, long time since I´ve posted anything. We have been busy with a lot of things, and it doesn´t look like it´s going to calm down until after Christmas. So, here is a short view of the things that we have been involved in:

LTS-Europe

In November we hosted a ten-day course called «LTS» (Leadership Training School). For this, over a hundred YWAM-leaders came together at our base for leadership training. It was very nice to meet so many people that work with YWAM at different places in Europe. Especially The extra cool thing was that Loren Cunningham, the founder of YWAM, had come to speak at the school too.
Marina was doing an amazing job in the kitchen, organising the three meals every day for over a hundred people.

The fourth issue of Mot Målet has dropped into people´s mailboxes by now. The theme of that issue is going to be «Hearing God´s voice», a typical topic for us in YWAM. I´ll show you guys mor of the magazine in a next post.
This month is almost over, and with a little delay I´ve finished the important part of my Inktober project for this year: the wedding vows that we have given each other. Above here are the eight lines of Marina´s vows to me.

I feel so much loved by the commitment and love that Marina is showing me.
Life goes on at Grimerud, we are back to our regular commitments here after the "Harvest Feast" we have had last week. This was a week where we all layed down our work for some days to look back on what has happened in the last year, and share about what we hope to see happen in the future.
One of the things we talked about during these days was the "Bible to All" campaign in our region. We are planning to offer a bible to all the thousands of homes in our county.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com0Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.440092699999994 -30.172754999999967 77.054243699999986 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-53681240466318078342016-10-12T16:08:00.000+02:002016-10-12T16:08:47.396+02:00Inktober 2016, part one

Inktober illustrations, part one

The slideshow up here is the first part of this year´s Inktober project. I´ve illustrated my wedding vows to Marina. It is so good to have a nice and manageable drawing project again. I wanted to illustrate our wedding vows, because visualising and seeing them gets me to remember and internalise them much better than having them written out in words. Also, involving Marina in it has gotten me to see some things about her that I had not known before.

By next week I should be done with Marina´s wedding vows to me.

Kairos-course

In the meantime, I am joining the DTS here at Grimerud for the Kairos-course. This is a ten day missions course. We have just started to work on another issue of our magazine Mot Målet, which means that articles are being written. This means that I am able to use my time in learning more about missions and missionaries. It´s been really good to be a student again, I´m learning a lot.
I´ve promised my co-students that I would share with them some illustrations based on what we have been learning. Once I´ve done that, I hope to share them here on my blog too.
Hospital report

Hello, here´s a little update again of me and my family in Norway. Marina had her ear-surgery last week on Wednesday, and everything has gone really well. She got operated on the otosclerosis on one of her ears. Tomorrow we will go back to the hospital in Elverum to remove the bandages and cottons that Marina had to keep in her one ear the whole time.

Office report

For the moment, Marina is still recovering from the operation, and she doesn´t need to get back to work until next week. Ana is still having lots of fun at Barnehagen and I am doing my regular things for YWAM Norway´s communication. Soon we will start working on this year´s fourth issue of Mot Målet, so that´s going to be good.
Besides my work for the magazine, I am often involved in a number of other national projects, even though my contribution isn´t alway very big or very central. One of those projects is the «Bible to All» campaign that has been going on since 2014. Two years back we started this huge project to offer a free bible to all of the houses in Norway. One (or two) of Norway´s counties have already been visited by the teams that hand out bibles, and now we are in the process of planning for two or three other counties. Norway has twenty counties in total.

Creative report

Just before I got together with Marina last year I was participating in an on-line arts event called «Inktober», and drew pictures for C.S. Lewis´ The Silver Chair. Everyone who participates in «Inktober» draws one ink-drawing for each day of the month of October.
This year I will visualize the wedding vows that Marina and I exchanged on the day of our wedding almost half a year ago. That will be two times eight pictures. For the other fifteen days of the month I want to draw some of the special moments of our wedding, and other pictures that I want to remember.

Magazine issues

Here´s a short work-related post with Mot Målet, our YWAM Norway magazine. Even though most of my recent post have been about my new family, I do still work with the same things as before.

This year´s third issue of our magazine has «talk about porn» as it´s theme. It´s a tricky subject to do layout for, but I think we managed it quite well. Luckily we were able to get a lot of good articles from a Norwegian christian website called Guttogjente.no
A few years ago some churches and christian organisations (also YWAM) saw the need to have a christian website where youth would be able to find biblical answers to their questions about their bodies, identity, relationships and sexuality. This became the Guttogjente.no website.
We have also gotten contributions from the Norwegian christian organisation Family&Media, a organisation that wants to make Jesus visible in the Norwegian media.

We don´t know how the following issues are going to be, because since the summer we are without an editor. This means that the work is going to fall back on other people, and one of them is me. Because of this I have been doing stuff on the Mot Målet-website too. It´s going to work out, it always does. God is good.

Tomorrow, me and Marina will go to Elverum for a check-up for her ear-surgery. And next Sunday the new DTS will start here at Grimerud. New things are happening, and that is exciting.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13802912150646303728noreply@blogger.com0Ottestad, Norway60.74716819999999 11.13583900000003344.440264699999986 -30.172754999999967 77.0540717 52.444433000000032tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519566203536133001.post-77240942161295194912016-08-31T18:34:00.001+02:002016-08-31T18:34:12.525+02:00The nice grey sketchbook

We visited both our home countries to spend time with all of our family there, and have two more very different wedding ceremonies in both of our home churches.

Even though we could have kept it with the wedding ceremony we had in Norway, we wanted as many of our friends and family to witness and celebrate our love and commitment for each-other.
We love the local churches that we are a part of, and that are sending our family out as missionaries.

In the Netherlands

The first part of our trip we were in the Netherlands, visiting my hometown Gramsbergen. From there we visited a castle in Germany and went for a few bike-rides in the area. A few days before we travelled on to Brazil, we spent some time with my brother in Amsterdam.
And Brazil

Then, for the whole month of July we were in Brazil. We spent a lot of time with our family there and visited lots of different places in the city. After our wedding-ceremony me and Marina spent four days in a mountain village for our second honeymoon.
The coming month is going to be a busy one, it´s back to work for the both of us, and Ana is back in the preschool. We´ll have to go visit the police station and the Brazilian embassy too this month to finally get things sorted with visas and passports for the girls. In the middle of the month, Marina will go to the hospital in Elverum for a surgery on her ear, so that´s exciting too.

Work

We have tried to get back into normal work-rythms after becoming a family, and simultaneously trying to wrap up our our Norwegian wedding, and planning the ceremonies in the Netherlands and in Brazil this summer. My work for the magazine has been on a pause until after the summer, so I´ve had the chance to work at Ana´s preschool here at Grimerud. We are very thankful for the opportunity that I have to work there, because we really need the exrta income to be able to pay the wedding-bills and our higher cost of living.
Tomorrow will be my last day working as a substitute preschool-teacher before the summer, and we are going to the zoo.

Our summer

Our big family-trip to the Netherlands and Brazil will already start next week. This week we are attending three «sommeravslutning» (closing for the summer). On Monday we had a barbecue for the Café UNO-staff at Linn´s house. Today after dinner, Ana´s preschool had a little party for the teachers, kids and their parents. Tomorrow we will have a closing barbecue with everyone at Grimerud.

There is a small chance that we might meet some of you this summer during our visit the Netherlands and Brazil. Our wedding ceremony in the Netherlands will be on the 26th of June, in my sending church. If you are able to come, you are welcome to attend the service, and the reception afterwards.
On the first of July we will fly to Brazil, and spend time with Marina´s family. Our wedding ceremony is planned on the 16th of July.

Enjoy your summer!

The wedding

We had an amazing wedding day on the sixteenth of April, we are so happy that so many of our family and friends could be there to celebrate our big day together with us. We had set up a live-stream for everyone that could not be there, and almost ninety people followed our wedding ceremony. Thanks for joining in from all over the world.

In the week before the wedding, we were of course very busy and stressed, trying to arrange everything as well as possible. But we got a lot of help from a lot of the people here and from my family. My parents and younger brother took the time to be with us for one week before the wedding.

God´s plan

At the day of our engagement on the twenty-first of January, we prayed to ask from God when we should have our wedding. To my surprise, the numbers «16.4.» appeared in my mind. When we checked the calendar, it showed that that would be on a Saturday. We were a little freaked out about how soon that would be, but after thinking about it for one week, we decided to follow God´s plan for our wedding and make the day official.

What followed were three very intense months. A time when we started learning to trust God´s plan for our marriage. There were a lot of things that needed to be arranged, and we had to take more than a few trips into town together to get all of that done.
The two most stressful things of the winter guerrilla-planning of our wedding was that we were not sure what the weather would be on the day, and that we did not have a pastor to lead the ceremony until only three weeks before the wedding.

The uncertainty about the weather kept us in tension much longer. There was snow on the ground two days before the wedding. It was April, and our plan the whole time had been to have our wedding outside on the lawn of where we live. The final moment of assurance of good weather, came later that day when the sun came out just when we had our general rehearsal. The day had otherwise been gray and rainy.
As you can see on the pictures, God made the sun shine very brightly for our ceremony. This came as such an encouragement and confirmation that He who planned this day could be trusted to provide for our marriage with all that He can give.

Honeymoon

Me and Marina had a very short honeymoon-trip to Denmark, since we did not want to stay away from Ana for more than three nights. The sun that came out for the time of our wedding ceremony did not follow us on the cruise to Denmark, and our twelve-hour stay in Fredrikshavn was mostly windy and wet.

The next chapter of our lives

It´s super good to be married, and to be family together with my two Brazilian girls. It has taken some weeks to adjust to our new life-situations, and to reprioritise our lives. My work for YWAM is still suffering from this big change, because some of my work time is still spent on the different kinds of paperwork we still have to do after the wedding.

And, we are planning to visit both the Netherlands and Brazil this summer. Our tickets are booked, and we will be in the Netherlands on the 21st of June for our Dutch wedding ceremony on the 26th of June in my home-church. Then on the first of July we will fly to Belo Horizonte, and stay there for the rest of the month. On the 16th of July we will have our Brazilian wedding ceremony in a park.

Then, after the summer we will continue with the things we have been doing here at Grimerud. I will continue to work with design and illustration for YWAM Norway nationally (and with spending some time every week at Café UNO and the preschool), Marina will continue working as the kitchen-manager, and at «The Mercy House» one day in the week. After the summer, Ana will start her last year in the pre-school that is right here at the base.
