30 January: Lina Sameien

Text message from Marte: Vesle Lina kom ut i verda ved keisersnitt idag tidelig kl. 08.48, 923 gram og 32 cm. Ho skreik med det same og har pusta sjølv sdan. Heilt fantastisk med berre en lunge etter berre 33 veker, og 8 av dei etter vannavganget. … Me takkar Gud! Blir på rikshospitalet også framover. Marte og Ole Kristian.

31 January: Everybody changes

Two of the girls at the café had said that they were so surprised that I had changed so much lately. I still wonder what change they had seen in me? A long while ago I realized that those two girls had changed and were so much nicer to work with. Thank you for being who you are, Linn and Christina! I am very happy and thankful to be working with you.

In case you wonder, the baby in the picture is not the real Lina Sameien.
Ole Kristian and Marte, the parents of Lina (and her sister Miriam), are the pastor-couple in my church in Norway.

And, just for the record, I am of course also very happy and thankful for all the other people at Café UNO.

Hier is weer een nieuwsbrief. Met dank aan Lienke Beenen die mijn Nederlandse spelling voor mij nakijkt.

Mijn werk doe ik niet alleen, gelukkig niet. Lokaal en internationaal werk ik met veel mensen samen. In deze nieuwsbrief kun je lezen waar "wij" zoal mee bezig zijn, en hoe ik daarin betrokken ben.
En als je het nog niet wist, dan wil ik je hierbij vertellen dat ik in 2012 een tekendagboek bij ga houden. Elke dag teken ik over mijn eigen leven. Mijn plan is om elke tweede dag twee dagboek-tekeningen op mijn blog te postten.

28 January: Where does my hope come from.

With a couple of people here, we had a talk about trusting God. Some had gone through tougher things than others, and had gotten a deeper trust in God. Somehow. Then the question came up of where their hope had come from in the tough times. For me, "it" has carried me, rather than that I have found it and held on to it.

29 January: Always talking with Jesus.

I was truly amazed to hear Tabea say that talking with Jesus has always been the most normal thing for her, ever since she heard her grandmother pray the same kind of prayers over and over. She, in turn, is very amazed that people can have a strong belief in God without finding it normal to talk with Him. And He is talking back.

After the last couple of days I thought I should "lighten up" and just draw a horse or something (I like to draw horses), and show that my life is not just a whole chain of deep heavy thoughts. Many things happen every day, and in the end I have to pick one to tell and remember.

These days again I was most impressed with the big ideas of hope and transcendence. Go figure, I work with a missions organization and spend most of my time with christians.

Even when I was at two meetings this weekend, the talks with people are the ones I want to remember.

26 January: Did we loose the fathers?

I can get so upset when I think of children that grow up without a father.

Mothers that are doing a double shift raising their kids.

I get upset thinking about the men that leave, or that are absent.

Can we men do our job to take responsibility and be faithful. I hope and pray I will.

27 January: Jan Willem reads the newspaper.

The Psychological survey of the youth in Hamar is still in the newspapers, and I am following it.

I want to know how the kids are doing that come by our café.

It is sad to hear the authorities say they can drop their youth-work because most kids are at home playing video-games.

And I read an article about the "Peter-Pan syndrome" in Vårt Land. The movie Finding Neverland is about the same thing, and tells the story of J.M.Barrie. I recognize myself in this and don´t want to be a man like this.

The difficult thing for me is that this drawing-diary is next to «Neverland» for me, I spend at least one or two hours every day on the diary. Life needs to be spent with real people, rather than written in a book, and put on display.

God did not just drop a book from the heavens, but sent His only son Jesus, and He lived his life here on earth. The book is about Jesus.

24. January: The kids are not doing so great.
Not in this area. There has been a big survey in a number of high-schools and many (one out of four) of the youth say that they have psychological problems (sleeplessness, depression, mobbing). In the last four years the number youth in psychiatric treatment (in Hedmark and Oppland) has gone up from 68 to 200.
Being young can me big turmoil, there are huge expectations coming at you. And that will only get more difficult to handle when you don´t have a safe and stable home.

25. Not a faded Prima Donna.
Today I have been going through boxes with of old photo´s, trying to look for the seventh father in the house (the oldest ones). YWAM started in Norway in 1972-ish. Most of the photo´s, negatives and reversal film slides I found were from the ´80 and ´90. I was very surprised to find a film slide from when the Grimerud farm burned down.

22 January: Baby-call with dream interpretation.
A lunch I sat with a mother and her daughter, and they had to watch a baby-call with a funny display. We started to imagine how it would be if there would be baby-calls that would give an interpretation of the child´s dream on the display. I believe every mother would have loved that.

23 January: Joachim is leaving.
He has been the caretaker here at Grimerud for about a year, on wednesday he is moving to another place. We had a goodbye party for him today where we thanked him and told him how much we appreciated him. I will not miss the noise of his blender in the kitchen (which is next to my room). He said he will not miss my alarm-clock going off in the house randomly at noon-time. Fair is fair.
I am going to miss his positive attitude and jokes around the house.

Using paper and cardboard models as reference

Voor mijn verhaaltje van vorige week wilde ik twee leeuwen tekenen. Dus heb ik van de gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om met modelletjes te maken en die als referentie te gebruiken voor de leeuwen-tekening.

David Peterson van de Mouseguard serie is hierin voor mij een grote inspiratie. Hij is een geweldige modellenmaker en ik vind het meer dan interessant om te horen hoe hij de wereld rond zijn verhalen opbouwt. Maar ik ben het meeste blij mee, dat hij zo graag zijn ideeën zo graag wil delen.

I knew I wanted to draw some lions for last weeks picture, and I took the opportunity to experiment with making paper and cardboard models and using them as reference for a picture.

David Peterson from the Mouseguard books does that a lot, and he is a huge inspiration to me, in several ways. For making models and for his thoughts on world building. And definitely for being so generous as to share all of it.

First off, after last weeks post, my parents sent a photo of me (in the front) and two of my sibling on a lion-statue.
This must have been about twenty years ago, when we were on holiday in Luxembourg with our family.

A few weeks earlier I had made a simple bridge-model out of cardboard.
I decided to try it out for this picture.

It took me just over an hour to make this Aslan paper-model,
you can see that I made it in kind of a hurry.

Instead of using a lot of time on making another lion, I took two pictures of just the one lion.
I pitched my digital camera atop on a coffee-cup just at the right hight and angle.
My camera has a timer-function that takes two pictures with a few seconds inbetween.
Those are the two smaller photo´s at the top.
In those few seconds I had to quick and place the lion on the other side of the bridge.
It is quite easy to piece both the photo´s together in Photoshop,
and end up with the reference picture at the bottom.

Once the composition was done and the lions were stoically pitted against each other, I sketched the final drawing, straight from the screen. Drawing form the monitor I use the help of a grid, it´s a fast way to keep to the proportions. In the bottom-corner you can see that I started the coat of arms of my birthplace Gramsbergen, but that one did not make it into the final. In the background, I started to draw some likes to make it look interesting, but that idea got pulled aswell.

And the final of the lions on the bridge. Awww, can I say that I think this one looks a bit boring, nothing´s really happening. Boring is bad. So the morning after I decided to put both a Dutch and Norwegian flag in the background, look here, I think it helped a little bit.

Ik heb er in ieder geval veel plezier aan gehad om de brug en de leeuw in elkaar te zetten, en om met mijn camera te spelen. Mijn modellen zien er nog niet uit als die David Peterson, maar daar werk ik in ieder geval wel naar toe, elke keer wanneer ik zijn blog bekijk.

So, I had a lot of fun making the models and playing with my digital camera. My models don´t look like David Peterson´s yet, but I am slowly working towards that. At least in my own mind.

I really like the Shirt designs that the Salvation Army is having.

20 January: What is that one doing up there?
If I want to my diary to be about "the real living thing" (16 Jan), then why have I not set out to share it with real living people. Instead of hiding it in social media that are rather unsocial and an edited fracture of our real lives. Should I set out to daily talk with someone about my life-story from now on?

21 January: Conversing real life.
… so I put yesterday´s plan in motion, and had a very good conversation with Eirik at Café UNO. I was very encouraged to see how much we have in common, and it was "confirming" for both of us to hear the other tell from his life. One thing we talked about was our need as christians to be involved in the local society.

18 January: Handmade by Linn.
I really like my colleagues at Café UNO, especially Linn. She has the most singular handwriting I know of. Today I worked with digitizing menu´s, recipes, work-lists and reminders. I was not able to find a font to replace her handwriting, even the shopping-lists look esthetic.

19 January: Autistic Girl Expresses Unimaginable Intelligence.
It was touching to see this video, it shows me to keep believing in people and never give up on that. To be hope for them and with them. And not to box someone after a diagnosis or an MBTI-type, but so much more to want to get to know them personally.

I would a little shopping list from the Café that I stapled in my diary, to have the real handwriting. It ended up covering some of the drawing for that day. The text is on one of the walls in the café, it reads:

We love people because they are beautiful,

they are not beautiful because we love them.

Drawing Diary: 16 and 17 January 2012

16 January: This is a picture of what I am trying to explore in the beginning of the diary. I rather want to be telling about the real living thing rather than something fabricated. That is the difference between a diary and a picture book. It is shows me a lot about what the incarnation is and means.

17 January: Rats! The battery of the car was flat when I wanted to drive back from having worked a full shift at Café UNO. I phoned Audun, and after half an hour he came with a rescue team to jump-start the car.
It´s kinda embarrassing to think that I still remember so many Pokémon.

It is a lot of fun to make the siding pages match in composition, I end up with stuff I would have otherwise never have drawn.

Nederlands nut / Profitable Dutchness

This is maybe not the most fitting image for the subject.
But I thought that this was a good chance to draw myself sitting on a lion.
In an other post I will tell you more about how I made this picture.

Tijdens de kerstviering hier op Grimerud hadden we het zo rond mijn tafel over culturele identiteit. Toen ze mij vroegen of ik me Nederlands of Noors voelde, moest ik even nadenken. In Nederland voel ik me meer Noors dan de Nederlanders, en in Noorwegen voel ik me meer Nederlands dan de Noren. Dit gevoel is sterker in Noorwegen, ik voel me meer een buitenstaander in de Noorse samenleving als de Nederlandse samenleving. Noorwegen is "thuis" voor mij, maar ik ben ook thuis in Nederland.

Mijn rijbewijs is Noors, maar mij paspoort is Nederlands (van de Ambassade in Oslo), ik weet eigenlijk niet of ik een Noors paspoort kan krijgen.
Na vijf jaar loopt dit jaar mijn verblijfsvergunning af, dus moest ik hier een oplossing voor vinden. Afgelopen maandag had ik on-line een permanente verblijfsvergunning aangevraagd, en toen ik de donderdag op het politiebureau was, heb ik het gelijk mee gekregen. Lekker snel en ook nog eens gratis (daar houden Nederlanders van)

Door de jaren ben ik een paar van mijn Nederlandse vooroordelen kwijt geworden, en helemaal Noorse zal ik nooit worden. Veel van de Noren hier zeggen dat ik een Noor geworden ben, maar dan ben ik beleefd met ze oneens en vertel dat ik graag Nederlander wil blijven.
Ik ben er zeker van dat mijn Nederlandsheid tot groot nut zal zijn in Noorwegen.

At the Christmas-party here at YWAM Grimerud, the people at my table were talking about cultural identity, and which nationality each felt closest to. Then they asked me wether I felt I was Dutch or Norwegian. I had to think a little bit before I could answer this.

I remember I said something like: "When I am in the Netherlands, I feel more norwegian then the Dutch, and when I am in Norway, I feel more dutch than the Norwegians." The feeling is strongest when I am in Norway. I would feel more "out of place" in Norwegian society then back in Dutch society, even after I have been in Norway now for six years. So, I would say I feel I am mostly Dutch.

My drivers-licence is Norwegian, but my passport is Dutch (from the ambassey in Oslo). I am not sure if I could get a Norwegian pass.
My residency-permit had ran out after five years and I had to go fix that. Last monday I applied on-line for permanent right of residency, and I got it right away at the desk on the Hamar police-station on thursday.
Over the years I have lost some of my Dutch biases, and I will never be fully norwegian.
Sure, I hear many Norwegians say that I have become a Norwegian. But then I politely disagree and say that I have the intention to be Dutch.
I am sure that my dutchness will be of value here at my work in Norway.

Here is a selection of what is written about the Dutch people on Wikipedia:

The people tend to view themselves as modest, tolerant, independent and self-reliant. They value education, tolerance, hard work, ambition and ability.
The Dutch have an aversion to the nonessential. Accumulating money is fine, but spending money is considered something of a vice and associated by some people with being a show-off. A high style is considered wasteful and suspect with most people.
The Dutch are proud of their cultural heritage, rich history in art and music and involvement in international affairs.
Dutch manners are frank and can be described as a no-nonsense attitude, informality combined with adherence to basic etiquette. This might be perceived as impersonal by some other cultures but is the norm in Dutch culture. As always, manners differ between groups.
Asking about basic rules will not be considered impolite.

Many of the farms and barns here in this part of the country have little steeples (mostly with a bell) on them. I have been wondering why that is. I think it could be a warning device (for when dinner is done and the farmer can come home from the field). Even our gym-hall at Grimerud has a steeple and bell. I have never heard that bell.

Drawing Diary: 12 and 13 January 2012

Jan. 12 We had biblestudy-group and talked about what it meant to "prepare the way for the Lord" (Isa 40:3). Conclusion: That we should make it possible and easy to for everyone to know Him and come to Him. In the same way that manslayers should be able to get to the cities of refuge (Num 35, Jos 20). And everyone along those roads would be responsible to keep the roads clear.

Jan. 13 It´s just nice to hear to Kjell Olav (he does the car-park) talk about cars and trucks and airplanes and Norwegian roads. Not that the stories are so special or exciting. It´s just a nice break from the "spiritual"-talk and girl-talk that dominates here at the YWAM base.

Donderdag had ik mijn dagboek overgeslagen, en pas vrijdag geschreven. Ik ben fexibel met mijn eigen regels. Het leuke is, dat ik beide dagen visueel bij elkaar heb kunnen brengen in één tekening. De gast in de truck moet op William Fitzsimons lijken, een amerikaanse singer-songwriter, hij heeft een grote baard.

I skipped my journal on thursday, and did not write it before friday. I am flexible with my own rules. And look, in the end I got put both days together in one unified picture. That is always fun. The guy in the truck is supposed to look like William Fitzsimmons, I have been listening a lot to him playing DJ at 1LIVE Kassettendeck.

Grimerud got a big load of leftover milk and meat-products. The meat we got from the Salvation Army, it was they were not able to use. In they had gotten it from a local supermarket-chain. Both the milk and meat-products are a big blessing. So much food seems to be going to waste in this country. The market seems to put hug value on the customers and pricing.

When the customer is king,
then someone else is not.

We had just opened the Café and an older lady walked in. She told us how happy she was for the work we are doing, and how much we mean for the youth of the city, she worked as a medical doctor. She walked around in the café a bit and looked at the menu and prices we have on the wall. She wondered what our budget looked like with such low prices. She took out her wallet and gave us a 200 NOK note.

That was encouraging!

It is usually very good to hear Andreas speak, and I think I am starting to figure out how he does it .
It stood out for me to hear him talk about how he is relating to God, last week at the YWAM staff gathering.
He does talk more often about it, but this time it just stood out more.

So, every day I write a little something of what I have been thinking about, or what has been happening.
No rules really, I am just not going to show you all the pages, it´s a diary, you understand that.

Here is the interview with M. Sendak. I remember seeing his books in our village library when I was little.
The looked very different with a very different atmosphere, a mysterious one perhaps.
And I think his "belief" in Blake is very interesting.

Begin December heb ik van een erg goede vriendin een tekendagboek gekregen, tot het nieuwe jaar heb ik gigantisch zitten denken wat ik met dit tekendagboek zou willen doen. Het is nogal een overgave om elke dag een tekening te maken, met elke tekening ben ik minst een uur bezig.

Voor ik met een project begin, wil ik graag weten dat ik het ook af kan maken. Dan voelt het zo onhandelbaar en willekeurig om elke dag een verschillend plaatje te verzinnen. Dus dacht ik om het dagboek te gebruken om hele verhalen te tekenen, elke dag een plaatje. Voor een illustrateur is het erg waardevol om met plaatjes een heel verhaal te kunnen vertellen, vooral wanneer je voor strips en boeken tekent. Ik vind het betoverend om mijn eigen vertellingen te kunnen bedenken en uitvoeren. Dat is zoveel meer betoverend dan mijn eigen leven.

Ik was van plan om oude Noorse volksverhalen te tekenen, het verhaal van de twaalf wilde eenden of over de prinsessen in de berg blauw. Een ander idee was, om mijn eigen uitvoering/aanpassing te maken van de reis van sint brandaan (over deze laatste zal ik jullie waarschijnlijk een andere keer wat meer vertellen).

Van deze ideeën heb ik afgezien, omdat ik weet dat ik dan voor de komende maanden een fictioneel verhaal in mijn hoofd leef. En ik heb ampel tijd om de verhalen af te maken waar ik momenteel mee bezig ben.

Dus, is zal tekendagboek een persoonlijk dagboek gaan worden, en het zal over mijn leven gaan, dat is mijn voornemen. Op deze manier hoop ik dat het alsnog een samenhangend verhaal word, in ieder geval in míjn hoofd. Ik denk dat ik de meeste pagina´s hier en op twitter zal posten. In ieder geval voor het jaar 2012.
Wanneer je mijn teken-dagboek wil volgen, kun je verwachtten dat je me beter zult leren kennen.

Just before christmas a very good friend gave me a drawing-diary. And for about the rest of the month of December I have been wondering what I was going to do with this book. Making one drawing every day is quite a dedication, each drawing takes at least one hour.

Before I start a project I would like to know that I can finish it as well. And I thought I could use this new dairy to illustrate a whole story or fairy tale, one picture after another. Because I think it is very valuable that I illustrate a whole story rather than to keep drawing different and random things. As an illustrator it is very valuable to be able to tell a story with pictures. I like to tell stories, they are so much more enchanting than my own life.

I had been planning to do the Norwegian folk tale of The Twelve Wild Ducks or The Princesses in the Mountain Blue. Another idea was to make an adaption of The Voyage of Saint Brendan (about this last one, I will probably tell you another time). I could have gone with either of these ideas, even when I don´t really see how that would go. I would end up living through a fictional story in my head for the coming months. While I see that I am short on time to finish the stories that need to be finished.

So, now the diary is going to be a personal diary, and it is going to be about my life, this is my resolution. That way I hope it will still be a coherent story, at least to me. Most of the pages will be posted here and on twitter, at least for the year 2012.
It is mostly a personal challenge, I want to see how this thing will end up. You can expect to see most of my days here, and you can expect to get to know me a little better.

Using a digital 3D model as reference for the New-years card

De kerst/nieuwjaarsvakantie is over, en ik ben weer aan het werk.

Traditioneel begint elk nieuw arbeidsjaar bij YWAM Noorwegen met een grote conferentie waar iedereen in de organistie bij aanwezig is. Ook dit jaar is de conferentie hier op Grimerud. Bij elkaar zij we omennabij vierhonderd studenten, medewerkers en zendelingen. Iedereen moet zijn steentje bijdrzgen, en mijn steentje is dat ik samen met vier anderen twee keer het ontbijt mag verzorgen voor al deze mensen.

In mijn vakantie heb ik de tijd gehad om een paar mooi platen te maken. Hier kan je iets zien van hoe ik met Google SketchUp de nieuwjaarskaart gemaakt heb. Ik hoop dat je de verschillende stappen in het process kan zien, en ook dat ik steeds veranderingen blijf maken, helemaal tot get einde.

Our Christmas/newyears break is over and I am back to work.

Traditionally in YWAM Norway we start our year gathering together here at Grimerud. This week the will be about four-hundred workers gathered for the conference that we call "the workers gathering". There will a couple of days of networking, seminars, meetings and an overcrowded dining hall and café. From this conference, all the DTS-students (the bible/mission-schools that YWAM run) will go on a 2-3 month mission trip. The students from the Grimeud DTS, will divide in two teams, one team is going to Poland and the other team is going to Tanzania.

I my holiday, I had a lot of time to work on a couple of nice pictures, below you can see how I made this New-Years card using Google Sketchup. I hope this shows some of the different step of my process, and aswell that I keep making changes all the way until the end.

I wanted to the farmhouse to be a combination of traditional Norwegian and Saxon architecture and design.
I ended up with the a Saxon style thatched roof, where the roofing ends only 1,5 meter from the ground, I also liked the semi-round windows in the roof, that have no thatching under it. Another saxon-style thing are the roof endings, which you can see in the sketch above, but none of it shows in the finished picture.
Some of the Norwegian elements are the front porch and balcony and the "Acanthus"-style of wood carving.
My sister gave me a book about the native art of Norway, and that has been a very helpful book.

Omdat het een nieuwjaarskaart zou worden, wilde ik er op één of andere manier de jaarwisseling in verwerken. Dit heb ik gedaan met twee friezen met housnijwerk, ze zijn te zien aan weerszijden van het balkon. Voor het oude jaar heb ik een ondergaande maan gekozen, en voor het nieuwe jaar een zonsopkomst. De jaartallen staan op de balken erboven, voor de duidelijkheid.

Because it is a new-years picture, I wanted to somehow add this idea of going from the old year in the new one. I chose to make two friezes with woodcarvings. One with a moon going down, depicting the ending of the old year. The other with a rising sun, depicting the coming of the new year. The numbers of the years are in the beams above it, just in case someone would miss the point.

With a free program called Google Sketchup I made a simple enough 3D model that I used as a reference for the drawing. I am not that good at perspective drawing, so making an digital model was a easy and fast solution.
This was my first time using this program, and it was a lot of fun, it is actually not so difficult to use.
Once I was satisfied with how the farm would look like, I took this 2D picture of the model which I printed.
Then I just had to trace the outlines of the building on the drawing paper, and fill in the rest.

Zoals je ziet heb ik de friezen er pas op papier ingetekent, ik had het balkon als 3D model iets anders bedacht. Ook heb ik de middenbalk in de tekening weggelaten, eigenlijk gewoon omdat het alles wat makkelijker maakte. Daarna nog meer kleine er grote verandering die ik met de vrije hand gemakkt heb.

I added the friezes to either sides of the balcony, they are not there in the 3D model, as you can see. I also decided not draw the centre-beam that you can see in the model, and a couple of more things I added by free-hand.

In the area I live many of the farmhouses and barns have a little steeple, they are not supposed to be church steeples. I like them and I wanted to put a steeple on this farm house too.
The steeple make it into both the digital model and the pencil sketc. In the end I decided that it did not have the time to include it in the final drawing, and I went without it.

Wanneer de hele tekening klaar was heb ik het gescand en digitaal ingekleurd, en inkleuren is een intensief process waar ik zo een 5 uur mee bezig ben. Het originele formaat van de tekening was ongeveer een A4, uiteindlijk heb ik het ingekort en er een vierkant van gemaakt.

When I was done with the whole ink drawing, I scanned it and went to color it digitally (in Photoshop). It easily takes up to 5 hours to do all the coloring, especially when there are lots of details. The original format of the picture was about A4 size, but I cropped it to a square in the end.

Kerstengel / Hear the herald angel sing

Beter laat dan nooit, hier is alsnog een digitale kerstkaart uit het stormige Noorwegen. De meeste sneeuw is hier al weer weg, de orkaan Dagmar blaast de vorst en kou het land uit. Het ziet er naar uit dat we een milde jaarwisseling gaan hebben.

Dit jaar ben ik de kerstavond bij één van de families hier op Grimerud geweest. Het blijft toch een beetje verwarrend. In Nederland zou eerste kerstdag op de zondag zijn, hier in Noorwegen was het op de zaterdagavond. Ik was gelukkig klaar met mijn kadootjes.

Iedere familie heeft zijn eigen kersttradities. Thuis zouden we naar de kerk gegaan zijn, en lekker eten met de familie. Dan ´s avonds een film kijken ofzo. Hier in Noorwegen gaan ze natuurlijk ook naar de kerk, en dan het traditionele "pinnekjøtt" of "ribbe" of vis voor het kerst-diner. Dan worden de kadootjes opengemaakt die iedereen voor elkaar gekocht heeft.

Waar ik dit jaar was lazen we het kerstverhaal uit het evangelie van Lukas, dat vind ik een mooie traditie en dat zou ik ook als mijn "eigen" traditie willen houden.

Mijn Kerstmanbaard / My Santa-beard

Ja, in mijn vorige post had ik het er over dat je als illustrateur een contributie doet om de in de kerststemming te brengen. Ik had jullie hier nog niet mijn kerstmanbaard laten zien.Wat istie mooi hè!

Dit is het verhaal van de kerstbaard: Het zal in de zomer geweest zijn dat ik mijn baard heb laten staan, in de eerste plaats voor mijn éénjarige neefje Ties. Je peuterleven is niet áf zonder een rare oom met grote baard die in een ander land woort. Zo liggen die zaken nu éénmaal, en daar moet je geen loopjes mee nemen.
Nadat ik in de herfst in Nederland geweest was had ik mijn baard langer laten staan. Bij ons op Café UNO, waar ik dinsdags werk, had Linn me uiteindelijk overtuigd dat het een leuk idee zou zijn om mijn grote baard wit te verven, voor de kerst.

1 December hebben we toen met de jongens hier mijn baard geverfd, en daar hadden we de hele avond voor nodig. Geen van ons was zeker of het ging lukken, maar we waren toch unaniem tevreden over het resultaat.

Ik heb een paar dagen met de wit-gele baard rond gelopen, en toen was het wel weer genoeg. Nou is alles er af, en het is erg lekker om mijn kin weer terug te hebben.

Kerstkaarten / Christmas Cards 2011

Making christmas cards is so much fun,
much more fun than choosing christmas cards,
much more fun than buying christmas cards.

I could just do this all year long, it just doesn´t stop.
It is "sikkelig Julestemning" to think about your friends and come up with a picture for them. As an illustrator I guess I am part of making the "Julestemning" happen, so other people get in the mood.
I like the "nisser" in the Norwegian folklore and christmas-tradition, they are not as defined in Norwegian culture, compared to other cultures and stories. As an illustrator and a "storyteller" you can be very flexible with them. Much much more flexible than with Santa or with the story of Jesus birth (and that is christmas is about).

Still the birth and incarnation of Jesus is what christmas is about, even when it is not so easy come up with a creative and fresh look for the that story. I want to stay true to the stories of the bible. But I think I have a really good idea for what my "big real" christmas card is going to look like for this year. Check in on my blog again next week.

YWAM Value nr. 18 Communicate with integrity

Yay, our organization has a new value!
Ok, that sounded a bit nerdy,
but I am very happy with this one.
(find the typo)

On the big YWAM.org site, you can find all the other foundational values of YWAM and what we stand for and believe in.

In the last years I have been working at the information department for YWAM Norway, and we do the YWAM Norway magazine and website, and much other printed materials, mostly promotion for schools, courses, seminars and events.

This our new value seems to be more about the importance of communication and how to do so. Maybe this one is meant for internal communication.

"YWAM has a decentralized structure … . We are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 180 countries, with a staff of over 18,000." (from YWAM.org)

Those are a lot of different countries and cultures.

With my pictures I want to "communicate well". I want to make sure that the ones seeing the pictures really gets the message, whether the picture is a part of telling the story, or wether the picture is there to give mood to the message.
I would rather want to make a "powerful" or "clear" picture, than one that will let people wonder what it is or means.

Another thing, I want my pictures to communicating well to the audiences that they are meant for. This last one has still been a great challenge for me, as I have not spent a lot of time on researching what these audiences like.

Anatomy lesson of doctor Tulip remake process

At the end of the summer I was working on some report,
For the cover of the report I choose to remake one of Rembrandts paintings.
The painting is called: The anatomy lesson of doctor Tulip.
This is the final picture.

For this illustration I printed the painting on a piece of drawing paper.
But I printed it at a very low opacity, just visible enough.
This way I would know the proportions would be right, and I was able to work faster.

The is was just to draw the most important lines on the preprinted picture.
It´s important to get the faces right, faces are very telling.

When the pencil-lines were done, I inked the whole thing with a nib-pen.
Here you can see that the "subject of the lesson" has been swapped out with stacks of paper.

With a regular eraser, I was able to remove both the pencil-lines and the ink of the pre-printed image.
After this I scanned the ink-lines and colored it digitally, somewhat after the original painting.

My bottle of indian ink had been standing in the hallway and got knocked over.
Someone passing by thought we were going to paint the floor black!

November Horse Sketches

This is the same girl that was riding a cow´s back a few months ago.
This time she has not come out so calm and majestic.

I took the book "Te hooi and te gras" with me from my stay in the Netherlands,
It is a picture book by Rien Poortvliet, and it has much farm life in it. This wagon was in there too.
Just not with the kids and the added decorative woodwork.
The woodwork is supposed to look like native Norwegian style of carving.

From time to time, it is great fun to live and work on the farm,
I am very happy that I have worked on different kinds of farms, both in the Netherlands and on Iceland.

<3 horses

Ik zit nou in een periode waar ik heel veel naar het "eggie" aan het tekenen ben (van echte foto´s en tekeningen/schilderijen), kopieeren kan denk ik iedereen.

Hoe meer ik het illustreren als mijn werk ben gaan zien, hoe meer ik ook zie dat ik nog heel veel moet leren. En ik geniet er van om paarden te tekenen, die hebben karakter.

I have had a period where I have been sketch a lot from reference (both photo and illustration), the more I have been looking at illustration as my work, the more I have figured out that I still have a lot to learn. And I just enjoy doing horses, they have character.

Ik ben weer terug in Noorwegen, en heb het afgelopen weekend een nieuwsbrief in elkaar gezet. Ik hoop dat het een beetje overzichtelijk en samenhangend is. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik wel vaker een nieuwsbrief zou kunnen maken, maar heb er geloof ik niet de tijd voor.
De tekening voor de voorkant hebben jullie een paar maand geleden al een keer kunnen zien, ik vind het nog steeds een mooie plaat.

Ondertussen werk ik weer aan een nieuwe Mot Målet, en ik moet zeggen dat ik er zo langzamerhand wel aan gewend raak. Ik ben vormgever en illustrateur tegelijk, en dan geeft mij de keus om te kunnen kiezen of ik een artikel zelf wil illustreren of dat ik het liever op een andere manier oplos. Voor mij is het belangrijker dat ons blad er goed uit komt, als dat ik mijn tekenkunsten zoveel mogelijk kan promoten.
Sommige zaken zijn ook niet makkelijk om te illustreren, en dan ga je nog wel es een paar rondjes voor je een goede oplossing vind. Dan zal ik er ook gelijk bij zeggen, dat ik vrij hoge verwachtingen stel. Van stockfoto´s ben ik vaak niet echt gecharmeerd.

My newsletter is in Dutch only. I am doing good, I was very happy that I had the oppertunity to visit my family and friends in the Netherlands at the end of last month. My work is going good, and it is really a puzzle to get my head around how to be an illustrator in Norway.
I am fully aware that I will probably not be able to make a living out of this illustration business, making comic´s in Norway is even worse.
The cover image is the same one I posted a few months ago, I just really like this drawing.

In these weeks, a new issue of Mot Målet is being made, I have to say I am quite getting used to this kind of work. Can be good, can be bad. For the magazine, I am both designer and illustrator, this gives me the flexibility to choose how to present the different articles.
My goal is then always to find the best graphic solution for the articles, rather than to take every chance to showcase and promote my drawings.
Some articles just aren´t easy to illustrate, and it can really frustrate me when I can´t come up with a "good enough" idea. Stock-photography is a good enough back-up alternative, I just think it doesn´t look nice.

Planes and trains: sketching time

This is me being crayon-green, posing like I´m blue.
My brother made this quick sketch when I was visiting them last week.
We tried to get my nephew (age 1) to sketch some too,
He was more interested is stacking and sorting the crayons.

On airports, planes and trains I often spend the time sketching,
Just looking at people, and make interesting drawings of them.
People that don´t read or sleep on the airplane look like such assassins.
I doodled a few monograms for my nephew Ties,
the top one ended up looking like an elephant.

Here and on the other page, I have been practicing some sheep/lam, there was a need for that.
And dads with young children/babies, lately I have been around small children alot.
Sketchbook and pencil was my only hand-luggage on my last flights between Oslo and Amsterdam.

So everyone has a unique "line", just like everyone has a unique and recognizable voice and body smell.
Your line shows in how you draw and write, it´s kind of your own style.
You can develop it, but some things never change.
So, the thing on the left-hand page is just that, a drawing.
I just filled the page with lines that were natural to my hand.
The segments are colored with four colors of crayons,
I did it in such a way that no connecting segment would have the same color.

On the right-hand page I applied the wavy lines to a subject, which where lion statues.

This is me on my 30th birthday, together with my 1+ year old nephew Ties. He was happy to see me, but a bit scared of the beard I think.

On the first of January many crazy Dutchies make a "newyears-dive",
This what as far as I got for my new fourth decade.

Very dandy Dutch dike-sheep. They keep them on the dikes to graze the grass.

Many of the farms and the houses have traditional thatched roofs.
The roofs are very high, and the doors and windows are quite small.
This farm has a little extra chimney for the farmgnomes.

Sorry, no fantastic drawings this week. I am celebrating my thirtyeth birthday with my friends and family in the Netherlands. Here are some photo's from last weekend. We rented a place in Hippolythushoef with my family. See you back in Norway next week.

Spike Comic (4H project)

Even kort in het Nederlands: Dit is het resultaat van een tekenpjoject wat ik het afgelopen half jaar met Emil (13) gedaan heb. Voor een 4H-project wilde hij leren om strips te tekenen. Om de andere week hebben we aan een stripverhaaltje gewerkt. Hier is mijn versie van het stripverhaal, en een kleine inblik in hoe we de strip gemaakt hebben.

Looky, that´s a fun 4-page comic, with a little bit of how I made it. This is the final result of a project I have done together with Emil (13), who lives in nearby Stange.

Emil is very good at drawing, and for his 4H project, he wanted to learn how to draw a comic. For the last half year, we have been meeting about every other week and went through most of the process of how I would make a comic:

Write a good enough story and characters.
Make sketches of how we want to divide the story over four pages, I think we used a lot of time on how to do good page-layout. I think this a very important part of telling a story as a comic.
Because Emil likes Manga, we got into comparing Manga with other kinds of comics.
We drew the whole comic with pencils, and then everything with ink. It was the first time for Emil he worked with real ink and brush.
After all the inking, we continued to scan the drawings and cleaned the digital image from mistakes and smudges.
Then we used a lot of time on the digital coloring of the comic. This is a very time-consuming part of the process. Emil only managed to color one page.
In the end we made a cover page for the comic and talked about what makes a good cover. Then we prepared for the exhibition he is going to have at the end of this month.

If everything goes according to plan, I will be able to be there on that exhibition, and see the final result of our cooperation.

I have very much enjoyed it to be teaching him some of what I have learned, I see that he has improved a lot in his drawing-skills. In the end, this project has been taking more time then I thought, and I think it had been the same for him.

I think it´s valuable to teach other what I have learned so far, I myself have always appreciated when I was able to learn form others and when they would take their time for it.

Shire horse sketches

This is a Shire horse, they are beautiful and powerful horses.
I enjoy drawing horses, I don´t know why, they have a certain character.
I would like to go horseback riding one day, but it has to be an exciting place.

Voor een paar weken geleden ben ik Holly deWolf´s boek "Breaking into freelance illustration" gaan lezen, vandaag had ik nog naar een interview met haar geluisterd op Escape from illustration island. Het boek gaat over waar je aan moet denken wanneer je je als illustrateur wil gaan etableren. Het is een goed boek en het roept veel vragen op, onder andere over zaken doen en over promotie maken.
Nu galloperen er veel vragen door mijn hoofd, over hoe en wat, Het is nog een beetje een chaos, ik moet eerst eens uitvinden welke paarden ik in de kudde heb, en ze dan proberen te sorteren. Sommigen om aan te spannen, sommigen worden voorlopig gestald.
Het valt me nog moeilijk om dat zo tussen de bedrijven door te doen, en het liefst zou ik daar goed de tijd voor willen hebben.

Ik werk bij YWAM, en eigenlijk kan je ons rekenen als een zendings-freelancers-collectief. Ook hier moet iedereen voor een deel z´n eigen inkomen en promotie regelen. Gelukkig is Gods voorzienigheid is als een trouwe vaderhand.

Dit weekend heb ik een uurtje de bruine inkt/ecoline zitten proberen, en heb ik Shire paarden zitten tekenen. Omdat het vaak zwarte paarden zijn, heb ik ook gewone inkt gebruikt.

I started reading "Breaking into freelance illustration" by Holly deWolf. In this book she talks alot about what I should think of when working as an freelance illustrator. Oh, and today I listened to an interview with her on Escape from illustration island, it was mostly about that same book. This far the book has brought up a lot of questions for me. For example about business and about promotion. All these questions aremajectic Shire horses galloping around in my head, and I have to find the proper place for them. It´s a bit chaotic.
Firstly to find out what is in the herd, then to sort them out. Some to be draft horses, some to be the feral ones.
This hasn´t gotten enough momentum since I am trying to do this inbetween work and other responsabilities.

I work with YWAM, and I think you can count us a a big missions-freelancers-collective, where everyone has to take care of their income and promotion (with God as our provider).

This weekend I used a few hours with the new "Island-coffee" ink, and have been drawing some Shire horses. Because they typically are black horses, I had used some regular Indian Ink aswell.

Here you can see better what the brown ink looks like on paper.
I used a glass bottle as a means to stabilize my camera, if you look well, you see some reflection.
The above drawing is somewhat visible under the bottle.
While working on this one I saw that the curved lines give a nicer dynamic than the straight ones.

A fall-inspiration-trip

Het is anders niet zo vaak dat ik in Oslo kom, maar afgelopen donderdag waren we er een dagje met onze afdeling. Hier zijn een paar dingen die we er gedaan hebben:

We bezochtten de Herfst-tentoonstelling in Kunstnerens Hus, waar er veel moderne kunst te zien was. Het was interessant om er een paar uurtjes naar te kijken, maar moeilijk om er wat van te kunnen zeggen.
We hadden lunch bij Pascal, één van de fancyste café´s in de stad.
Ik zal de serveerster in verlegenheid gebracht hebben toen ik haar vroeg welke bonen ze voor de koffie gebruikten. Ik was gewoon nieuwschierig.
Opeens kwam er een wacht van de konklijke garde het café binnen (in vol ornaat) om voor het hof een bestelling te doen.
We bezochtten Norway Design, een winkel met typisch scandinavisch ontwerp, meubels en allerlei andere dingen. In de kelder etage hadden ze kunst- en handwerkspulletjes. Daar kocht ik twee kroontjespennetjes en een potje bruine ink (ecoline).

It´s not so often I get to be in Oslo, the capital of this country. This last thursday, with the info-department, we had ourselves a day there. Here are some of the things we did there:

We visited the Fall-exhibition at "Kunstnerens Hus", with lots of modern art that was interesting to look at and difficult to relate to.
We had lunch at Pascal, one of the high-class café´s in the city.
I probably embarrassed the waitress when she couldn´t tell me what kind of coffee-beans they used for their coffee. I was just being curious.
One royal guard (in his fancy uniform) came in the café and made an order on behalf of the court. #Kongenbetaler
We visied Norway Design, a shop that has typical scandinavian design items. On the cellar floor is a art and craft supply department, and I bought two pen-nibs and a well of brown ink.

In the design shop I looked at some nice and fancy Moleskine sketchbooks,
and wondered how one would stay well in my bag the whole time.
The saturday after I used some cardboard and tape to make a case for my current sketchbook,
that one is starting falling apart after almost two years.

A horse is a horse, ofcourse, ofcourse

This is one of my friends horse,
she had asked me for a line-drawing for a sweater.

Here is some of the process of how I made this drawing.
First I make a number of small drawings to find out how I like to make it.
Every drawing I sketch out the whole drawing in pencil, I do nothing without penciling.
Then I draw everything (this one with pen and ink) and erase the pencil lines.
In the end I scan it and remove the little spots and smudges.

Een nachtelijke roeier / A nocturnal rower

Omdat ik erg gewend ben kleurrijk, kindervriendelijke en levenigde tekeningen te maken, was het erg wennen voor mij om deze nachtelijke plaat te maken. Ik denk dat het deels is dat ik mezelf wilde bewijzen dat ik het kon. Maarr ik ben wel tevreden met de atmosfeer van de plaat. Een verhaal word gelijk spannender wanneer het zich ´s nachts afspeeld.

Voor het kleurgebruik heb ik me laten inspireren door de sprookjesplaten van Edmund Dulac, vooral de Rubaiyat. Uiteindelijk heb ik het meest van deze plaat afgekeken. Wat ik zo mooi vind met Dulac, is dat hij zijn platen zoveel laat glimmeren en fonkelen.

Een paar dagen geleden nog snel even een verjaardagskaart, het voelde lekker om weer om met levendige kleuren te werken.

I very regularly used bright and vivid colors. And this is a night-piece. It took some effort to stick with the darker nightly colors. I ended up doing this partly to prove myself (or someone else) that I could color a dark piece. But it felt like I sometimes had to go "against myself". But there is a certain excitement with a story at night time.

From the beginning I wanted the colors to look like one of Edmund Dulac´s fairytale paintings. I specially like the atmosphere of the Rubaiyat series for this one. I ended up using a lot of the colors from this painting. I really like the sparkle of gems that Dulac puts in most of his paintings.

Then a few days ago I drew someone a birthday card, and it was an enjoyment and relief to be able to use bright and vivid colors again.

Spelemannen ved fossen.

Hier is het waterval-landschap in kleur, hier in zwart-wit.
Een redacteur waar ik mee praatte, zei dat mijn kleur-illustraties er gauw kinderlijk uit komen te zien, en dat mijn lijn-tekeningen een meer volwassen uitdruk hebben. Ik denk dat lijn-tekeningen al gauw als "volwassen" gezien worden, met name door kranten illustraties. Kleur-illustraties vind je vooral in kinder- en jeugd- en schoolboeken. Maar is hierin heeft hij wel gelijk, dat ik graag levendige kleuren gebruik.
Wat denken jullie er van?

One editor I talked with, said that my colored drawings look more child-oriented than my black and line drawings. I think that generally black and white line drawings are considered to be more "grown-up" due to newspaper illustrations and cartoons.
Illustrations in color are more seen in children´s books, school-books and comics. I think he does have a point thought, I do see that I like to "make the drawing come alive" when I start to color it.

Spelemannen ved fossen.

Deze, en de laatste twee posts, hebben een sterke romanticische invloed. Sinds ik met het nieuwe boekproject bezig ben, zit ik erg in die richting te denken.
Het is een proces dat spannend, maar ook verwarrend is. Ik merk dat ik steeds van expressie blijf veranderen, terwijl mijn lijnvoering toch het zelfde blijf. Het voelt als een overgave en een beperking om een tekenaar van één gènre te worden. En daar ben ik een beetje bang voor, ik mag zo graag nieuwe dingen blijven proberen. Ik pas zo slecht in één doosje. Tegelijk dit ook mijn manier om de Noorse kunsthistorie bezig te zijn, zoiets gaat voor mij altijd beter wanneer ik er tekeningen van maak.
De onzekerheid weerhoud mij er gelukkig niet van om van mijn het tekenen te blijven genieten.

Wanneer ik in deze of andere stijl zu komen te zitten, dan zal dat uiteindelijk ook wel goed komen, ik zal er mijn weg wel mee vinden, en er goede dingen mee kunnen maken.

The drawings in the last three posts have had a strong romantic influence. In preparing for the coming book-project, I have been thing a lot in this genre.
It is a exciting process, and also a bit confusing. I notice I am constantly changing the ways I draw, my "line" pretty much stays the same. It feels like a big thing to limit my future work to one or two genre´s. I don´t want that to happen, I fit so poorly in just one box.
Another thing is, that this is my way of working with norwegian art-history. I "learn it" better when I make a few drawings.
Gladly, the insecurity is not keeping me from the enjoyment of drawing and learning. I am very satisfied with these last three drawings, even when I still have to finish this one.

I believe that "things" will work out, regardless of the boxes and genre´s I will be working with.
I will have a good times and make things good again.

Nice and vivid / Lekker levendig

Hyrule on my computer:
every new e-mail has gotten the "treasure-chest"-sound.

And a bit of Goron-city on my computer:
every error-message has a "Goron"-sound,
and there are lots of them.

Waar komen mijn ideeen voor zijn werk allemaal vandaan. Iemand zei dat ik een "levendige zalving" had, dat kan goed zo zijn. In ieder geval heb ik een levendige interesse in heel veel werkelijke en onwerkelijke dingen.

Zo ben ik sinds de zomervakantie weer "The Legend of Zelda" wezen spelen, en dat is ontspannend en inspirerend. Lekker een beetje rondlopen in een sprookjesbos en dingetjes verzalemen en puzzeltjes oplossen. Wat ik ook zo leuk vind aan dit computerspel, is de grote variatie aan figuurtjes, puzzels en camera-hoeken. En hierdoor ben ik op een nieuwe manier gaan denken over bijbelverhalen-vertellen.

Ik ben altijd op zoek naar nieuwe en spannende manieren om bijbelverhalen te vertellen. Of de verhalen er ook altijd duidelijker van worden weet ik niet altijd. Maar ik kan me in ieder geval enorm bezig houden om "van spijs te veranderen", in de overtuiging dat het de lezertjes aan de tafel zal houden.
En op één of andere manier is het dan de truc om te laten zien dat al die levendigheid in de bijbel (en God) zelf ligt, en dat het niet aan mijn fantastische "bewerking" ligt.

Where do my ideas come from. Someone told me I have a "vivid anointing", and that can well be. I do know that I always have had a vivid interest in many things real and unreal.

I have been playing the game "The Legend of Zelda" since the summer-holiday, and that was both relaxing and inspiring. Just running around through the fairy forest, collecting things and solving puzzles. What I like with this computer-game, is the big variety of characters, puzzles and camera-angles. It made me want to come up with new ways of telling bible stories.

I am always looking for new and exciting ways to tell bible stories. Wether those stories come out clearly, I am not sure of. Anyways, I can be endlessly occupied with finding appealing ways tell a story. And I hope it will get the readers to come back to read some more.
The bigger challenge is to show that this vivacity come from the bible (and God) itself, rather than just from my fantastic adaption.

Here is a study-piece I did for a children´s book. I am satisfied with the mood of the picture.
In the story, the environment is very different, and there will be more people and animals.
I still have some other ideas of how to do this scene of the story.
Here is my reference.

Nou ben ik terug van onze jaarlijkse Zomer-conferentie. Ook dit jaar waren we weer in Stavern, in het zuiden van Noorwegen. Hier waren we met ongeveer 400 man. Ondertussen heb ik verder kunnen werken aan het kinderboek. Ik houd van "wereld-bouwen", om een eigen wereld te scheppen. Of eigenlijk beter gezegd, om een geloofwaardige en tegelijk "eigen" wereld in elkaar te zetten. Je begrijpt dat er dan veel tijd in gaat zitten om het alles zo geloofwaardig te maken. Wereld-bouwen is typisch voor Europeese striptekenaars, Piet Wijn´s Douwe Dabbert en Maarten Toonder´s Bommel zijn goede voorbeelden van.
Als wereldbouwer merk ik dat ik gauw bij de nederlandse stripboeken van mijn kindertijd uit kom.

Last week I was at the YWAM-summer conference, it was in Stavern in the south of Norway. I think we were about 400 people there. Soon we will start again with a new YWAM-magazine. In the meantime, I am sketching and studying for the coming children´s book. Much of the time now goes into "world-building", this means that I am making the world in which the story plays. A good world needs to be recognizable, plausible and at the same time have it´s own identity (culture). World-building is typical for European comic-artists. I think Piet Wijn´s Douwe Dabbert and Maarten Toonder´s Bommel are good examples of this.
For my world-building, I notice that I am going back to the comics and books of my childhood.

The Tawny Owls are for a children´s book project, I can´t say any more.
What I can say is that I´m not used to draw after reference.
But it looks like I am getting it.

In the end I practiced a bit with Tawny Owls in flight,
The two owls to the left are Barn Owls.

Ja, de eerstkomende kinderpagina is af, het ging toch nog sneller als ik dacht. Degene die ik de kinderpagina heb laten zien vonden mijn nieuwe idee erg goed. Het idee is dat ik in zeven keer door een boek van de bijbel ga, met elke keer een mooie zoek en puzzle-plaat. Jullie komen de tekening nog niet te zien, nog niet.

Naast de kinderpagina´s ben ik ook nog steeds voor een kinderboek bezig. Eigenlijk zijn we nog niet echt begonnen. Ik moet nog altijd bij de schrijfster langs om beter kennis te maken. Ondertussen zit ik wel lekker te schetsen.
In het boek zijn uilen, En naar aanleiding van hoe de uilen en het landschap (habitus) dat in het boek beschreven worden, ben ik Bosuilen (Strix aluco) gaan zitten tekenen. Mijn studie Bos- en Natuurbeheer is dan niet helemaal verloren.

Jepp, the next "children´s pages" are in the box, until they will get published in a couple of months. I have been showing the new pages to some people, and they were very positive about my new idea´s. You guys will have to wait until it gets printed.
The idea is that we will go through one book of the bible, and learn how to read and study the bible. Of course with a lot of fun and activities. Studying the bible can be like "connecting-the-dots", or "find the five mistakes".

After the children´s pages, I am still working on that new children´s book. I have been sketching owls as you can see above. Because we have not really started to work together, I am taking my time to sketch some of the not-so-important things. From how the owls and the landscape (habitat) are described, I had figured that we could best have Tawny Owls (Strix aluco) in the story. I haven´t totally wasted my studies in Forstry and Natureconservation.

This is the fishing quarter of Joppa, and Jonah the prophet is boarding a ship.
The ship is on it´s way to Tarsis in Spain, Jonah was supposed to go Nineve in Iraq.
This is the linework for the children´s pages for the next issue of Mot Målet magazine.

De vorige week voelde vreemd voor iedereen. En de noren hebben gewezen dat ze zich als volk goed kunnen houden. Velen moeten er bij nagedacht hebben wat nu echt belangrijk is. Er zullen vanaf nu een aantal dingen gaan veranderen hier. Ik geloof dat de noren meer betrokken zullen raken lokaal, nationaal en internationaal.
Ik denk dat de aanslagen ook een aantal andere muren aan stukken hebben geblazen. Muren die de noren individueel en in groepjes om zich heen gezet hebben.
Vergeleken met veel andere westerse culturen is de noorse cultuur behoorlijk homogeen. En er leven maar vijf miljoen mensen op een uitgestrekt stukje aarde. Dat maakt de verschillen niet zo groot, en het is makkelijker om weer bij elkaar te komen.

Het was goed dat ik vorige week in café UNO heb kunnen werken. We hebben de hele week het café open gehad. Zodat de jeugd er kon komen om te hangen en te praten. Ondertussen heb ik wat kunnen zitten schetsen voor het komende kinderboek.

Deze week heb ik weer een "kinderpagina" op mijn tekentafel. Deze keer is het de eerste tekening in een serie van zeven. In de serie gaan we door het hele boek van Jona. Tegen het einde van de week hoop ik klaar te zijn met de hele plaat.

Last week was strange for everyone here in Norway, and the norwegians have shown to keep themselves well. Many have had to rethink what was important for them. Many changes will be made. One thing will be that norwegians will be more involved locally, nationally and internationally.
I think that these attacks also have destroyed some of the walls that individuals and groups had held between each other. I think Norway has a much more homogenous culture compared to other western cultures. And with only five million people in a rather large country, one would not expect so great differences.

It was good that I could be at Café UNO last week. We had opened it for the youth to come and hang and talk when they wanted. I worked mostly on the afternoons, and got a bit of sketching done for a children´s book project.

On my drawing board is one of the children´s pages for the next YWAM magazine. This one is the first in a series of seven. In the series we will go through the whole book of Jonah. By the end of the week I hope to have the big drawing done that is going to be there.

It is so cool to see that the norwegians are taking it so well after the terror-attacks of the 22nd of Juli.
I do not see them as vikings, rather as people that want peace and openness.

Met mij gaat alles goed, ik was vrijdag gewoon thuis en op het werk.

Een aantal van de jongeren die regelmatig bij ons in het café kwamen waren wel op Utøya. De laatste dagen heb ik een paar van hen gesproken, anderen zijn nog in het ziekenhuis. Onder de omgekomen jongeren waren er ook twee uit Hamar, een van hen kende ik.

Deze hele werk ik een paar uur per dag in het café. We houden het café de hele week open zodat de jongeren er bij elkaar en voor elkaar kunnen zijn. Zaterdag en zondag was het behoorlijk druk en bewogen, maandag en dinsdag was het al weer een stuk rustiger. De jongeren hangen ook op straat en op andere plekken. We zijn blij dat we er voor ze kunnen zijn.
Ik heb de verhalen van verschillende jongeren gehoord, en je merkt dat ze het allemaal verschillend verwerken. Sommigen zijn erg getraumatiseerd en anderen kunnen er op een normale manier over praten.
Eigenlijk had ik deze week vrij gepland, en zou ik gewoon thuis zijn, nu heb ik de mogenlijkheid om in de stad te zijn met de jongeren. Wanneer het rustig is in het café zit ik te schetsen voor het volgende kinderboek.

We zouden het erg op prijs stellen als wanneer jullie voor ons en voor Noorwegen zouden bidden.

Everything is okay with me, I was home and at work last friday.
Some of the youth that used to be at Café UNO in Hamar had been at Utøya that day.
In the last days I talked with a few of them, others are still in the hospital. Two of the victims of the Utøya-massacre were from Hamar, I knew one of them.

This whole week I will work a few hours each day in the café. We are opening the café for the the youth to come and hang out. Saturday and sunday it was quite busy. Today and yesterday it already a lot more quiet. The youth are also hanging in the street and at other places.
I have heard the stories from a few different youth, and you can notice how they all take it differently, very much in line with to their personalities. Some are very traumatized, others are talking about quite normally.
I was going to have a week of vacation this week, and would have been at home. Now I am in town a lot and in the café. Then there are few people, I am sketching for the children´s book that is coming up.

We would really appreciate it when you would keep as and the rest of Norway in your prayers.

Een boompje opzetten over Jezus. Foliage for a fair life.

Here is the latest "children´s pages" that I have been making. It is about Psalm 1.
The idea for this I got from Fighter Verses website, and their verses for week 16 and 17.

I had about one afternoon to make the graphics for the page, the text was already in place.
I come up with the context and outline for the children´s pages and get Chris to write the text.
I didn´t have the time to make a detailed and complicated drawing,
so I made a tree out of cardboard.

I took two pictures of the tree trunk,
and put them together in Photoshop afterwards.
This is one part.

I put some leaf-esque water color on a few sheets of paper, this is for the foilage.
Here the paint is drying in the sun, I put a stick over the papers so they would not blow away.
I keep a stack of printouts around, in case I want to use the backside for sketching or something.
That must be a Dutch thing.

The next step was to cut find and choose the right bit pieces of paper, and cut them into the right shapes.
This had to think of Eric Carle´s children´s books when I made these.
I remember our local library had several of his books. They are fun and colorful.
Young children really like very colorful pictures.

Because I still had very little time, I drew some simple leaf patterns on the shapes.
These "duck-feet" in the center have been my code for leaves for a while.

Then I jumbled the bits of paper a few times and took a few photo´s.
In the end I put everything together in Photoshop, and I will spare you an explaination.

Meestal heb ik een week om de kinderpagina´s te maken voor ons blad Mot Målet, de laatste keer had ik volgens mij maar een paar dagen.
Gewoonlijk wil ik de hele pagina tekenen, het liefst een grote zoekplaat met veel details, deze keer had ik daar echt de tijd niet voor en heb ik heel wat anders gedaan. Het was leuk om eens op een andere manier bezig te zijn. De puzzel met de appels is voor kinderen in de leeftijd van negen, en de twee "stip-naar-stip" figuurtjes zijn voor de jongere kinderen. Iedereen blij! Hier zijn een paar foto´s van hoe ik de boom op de achtergrond gemaakt heb.
Ik herinnerde mij de filmpjes waarop Eric Carle uit legt hoe hij zijn kinderboeken maakt. En heb een beetje geprobeerd om hetzelfde te doen.

Psalm 1 en 2 gaan over "een rechtvaardige man", natuurlijk gaat het dan over jouw wanneer je eerlijk leeft tegenover God. Maar degene die een werkelijk rechtvaardig leven leefde was Jezus, hij leefde precies zoals God dat wilde. Daarom kon hij voor ons de rechtvaardige straf dragen om ons vrij te maken. Die straf betekende dat hij verlaten en gedood werd. Maar hij is ook weer opgestaan en hij leeft.
Het is zo geweldig dat Jezus het mogelijk maakt voor ons om rechtvaardig te leven. En dat niet alleen voor jouw en mij, maar dat wilde Hij voor iedereen doen.
Wat kan jij doen zodat jij en anderen eerlijk voor God gaan leven?

Deze week heb ik hier in de keuken gewerkt, met een paar anderen heb ik voor een leger van 300 man het middag-eten staan maken, en daar kan je behoorlijk moe van worden.

Usually I have one week to write and draw the children´s pages for Mot Målet, the magazine for YWAM Norway. The last time I think I only had a few days or something.
I would have liked to draw a full-bleed page with lots of details and color, I didn´t have the time for that this time, and had to find another solution.
I remembered the video´s that Eric Carle has made about how he makes his books. I thought I could get something nice if I made something like that. On the pictures you can see how I made the tree for the background of the page. The puzzle with the apples is for children of about age 9, the "connect-the-dots" figures at the bottom are for the younger kids. Everyone happy!

Psalms 1 and 2 are about "a righteous man", and that could be you when you live fair to how God has asked you to live. And the one person who truly lived a fair life was Jesus, he lived exactly as God asked him to live. And that is why he could take the fair punishment for us, so we could live and be free. This punishment meant that Jesus was left by everyone and was killed. But He rose again from death and lives today.
It is great that Jesus has made it possible for us to live a life that is fair to God. And he did not only do this for you and me, but for everyone alive.
What can you do so you and others can live a fair life for God?

This week I have been working in the kitchen here, helping out to make dinner for an army of 300 people. And that has been quite a push, but we had a good team.

If it wasn´t for the flies and mosquito´s,
you wouldn´t say it was summer.
It has been raining most of the time,
this is traditional norwegian weather.

Summer-time at Grimerud means camps, festivals and BBQ-ing.
The boys came up with this ladder-tarp solution when it started to rain.

The next week there was another camp organized,
and we kept up our positive attitudes,
and improved the efficiency of the ladder-tarp construction.

En dan is het nog staads zomervakantie, en het pruttelt hier op een laag vuurtje voort. YWAM is een internationale zendingsorganisatie, en we zenden je graag voor een korte of lange tijd op zendingsreis. Deze week komen er 280 tieners/jongeren voor een zendingskamp. Na het kamp gaan ze voor een paar weken op zendingsreis naar landen als Litauwen en Roemenië. Voor al die mensen ga ik tijdens het kamp het eten maken, dat kan nog druk worden.

Op mijn bureau heb ik de palnning voor zeven "kinderpagina´s" liggen voor het blad van YWAM Noorwegen. Eerder maakte ik één kinderpagina per keer, en dat werd nog wel eens stressen. Nou dat ik er zeven tegelijk aan het plannen ben, hoop ik een beetje efficienter te kunnen werken.
Op die kinderpagina´s gaan we het over het verhaal van Jona hebben, dat is een lekker kleurrijk verhaal. Het boek van Jona is opgedeeld in vier hoofdstukken, maar ik maak mijn eigen indeling, zodat ze alles mee krijgen.
Met deze nieuwe kinderpagina´s wil ik het volgende doen: Het verhaal van Jona uitgebreid vertellen, en ze paar goede manieren om een bijbeltekst te studeren. En natuurlijk zijn er veel leuke tekeningen en activiteiten.

It is still vacation, and the activity-level is enjoyably summer-simmer. YWAM is a missions-organization, and we like to send people on short and long mission-trips. The coming week, there will be coming 280 teenagers/youth that will be here for a few days to get training. Then we send them out to places like Latvia and Romania, to have a two week missions-experience. During the training-camp here, I will help to prepare food for them.

On my desk are seven "children´s pages" that I am making for Mot Målet, the YWAM-Norway magazine. It has been quite a stretch sometimes to make the individual children´s pages before I start working at the rest of the magazine. The idea of planning ahead is that I will save time and hope to be able to work more efficiently.
I am going through the story of Jonah, which is a very colorful story. Even when the story is divided in four chapters, I am making my own devision of seven "topics".
My goals with this series are to show a bit more of the story, to teach the children how to study a text and of course to have a lot of activities and fun.

I am the kind of person that finds it difficult to take holiday.
Some people say that holiday is doing something different,
for me holiday is when I don´t have responsibilities.

Het heeft voor mij een paar dagen geduurd voor ik in de vakantie-stemming was, maar nu gaat het lekker, en dan ga ik morgen al weer aan het werk. Het is me dit jaar ook niet helemaal gelukt om helemaal geen verantwoordelijkheden te hebben tijdens mijn vakantie. Ik heb aan een paar brochures door gewerkt, en was ik afgelopen dinsdag de hele dag in Café UNO. En het gaat zo snel dat ik toch hier en daar iemand met een design of print probleempje help.
Er kwamen twee freelance-opdrachten binnen, en eentje is niet door gegaan, de andere ben ik nu wel mee bezig. Het zijn tekeningen over een noors zendingsverhaal van 150 jaar geleden. Momenteel ben ik nog aan het schetsen, en probeer ik een beetje peiling te krijgen van hoe het er hier toen uit zag.

It took me a few days to get into the holiday-mindset. But now I am enjoying it, and tomorrow I am back to work. Even while I did take some responsibilities, I did have a good time hanging out with my friends here at Grimerud and in Town. Last tuesday I had worked at the café, the whole month of July the café will be closed.
There came in two illustration commissions, and I ended up going with one of them.
It is about a norwegian missions-story from 150 years ago. This week I am sketching for the story, and since I actually have good time, I am researching a bit about what Norway looked like in that time.

Ties´s eerste verjaardag / Ties´s first birthday

Mijn neefje Ties had vorige maand zijn eerste verjaardag.

Ties is mijn eerste neefje, en het zoontje van mijn broer Mattijs.

Ik was een beetje druk met mijn werk,

en het duurde een paar weken voor ik wat voor zijn verjaardag gemaakt had.

Dit zijn vier speciale momenten uit zijn eerste jaar.

Zoals jullie kunnen zien heb ik Jip en Janneke figuurtjes getekent.

Het was zo leuk, dat ik de monsters op zijn shirt ook dezelfde gezichtjes gegeven heb.

My nephew Ties had his first birthday last month.

Ties is my first nephew, and the son of my brother Mattijs.

My work was keeping me very busy,

so I did not get to make and send something until a few weeks after.

These are four special moment of his first year.

I used the simple drawing style of Jip and Janneke,

from the famous Dutch children´s stories.

I liked the style so much,

I had to apply it to the faces of the monsters on his shirt.

When Ties was just a few weeks old he had to get operated.
He had a tiny hole in his groin, the Dutch word for groin is lies.
They lived quite near the university hospital,
there they know how to operate on very small babies.
The operation went well, and Ties is doing fine.

I came visiting from Norway in the summer.
We had a good time together, he is my softest nephew.
I always have a drawing pad and some pens with me,
and I helped him make his first drawing.

I just like the shirt a lot, I will get clothes like this when I become a father.
It´s a shirt from Maurice Sendak´s Where the wild things are.
I had the book lying around, so I gave it to them.

Here is Ties surrounded by moving-boxes and paint and a helmet.
This spring they moved to a bigger apartment,
three generations of Middag were involved in the moving project.

Momenteel heb ik twee weekjes zomervakantievakantie, en ik blijf in Noorwegen.
Ik heb de mensen en mezelf beloofd om niet stiekem te werken.
Dus heb ik lekker de tijd om te zitten tekenen en bijbel te lezen en te bidden.

Right now I´ve got two weeks of summer-holiday, I´m actually not going anywhere, I´m just staying here. I not very good at planning my time off.
I promised everyone and myself that I would not secretly do some work in my free time.
That will create some time for me to be making drawings...

Hier istie, het Øystein-kinderblad voor deze zomer. We hebben er 20.000 van besteld en vorige week zijn ze allemaal gekomen. The children´s magazine has been sent to the printer,
and all 20.000 will be here in a few days.
Chris and his team will be handing them out this summer.

Jepp, en nou bennen we klaar met de zomer-editie van Mot Målet, het blad van YWAM Noorwegen. Wat een gekluns, ik heb er bijna het hele weekend aan zitten werken. Gisteravond nog wel even wezen barbequen bij Trude, een van mijn café-collega´s, dat was wel weer gezellig. Zij woont aan de noordkant van Hamar, en daar was ik nog niet eerder geweest.
Het kinderblad is aan het eind van vorige week eindelijk naar de drukker gestuurd. Er worden er 20.000 gedrukt, en die zullen deze zomer uitgedeeld worden. Het is nu meer als anderhalf jaar geleden dat we aan het blad begonnen zijn. En na het een half jaar stil gelegen heeft, hebben we het vijf maand geleden weer opgepakt. Hierboven is de uiteindelijke cover van het blad. Al eerder had ik de tekening van de auto al gepost, maar nu istie helemaal af.
We hebben twee extra vellen met Auto-bingo gemaakt, die voor iedereen te downloaden zijn. Ze zijn wel bedacht voor de noorse wegen, maar het zal ook in Nederland wel gaan.

Jeps, and now we just finished the summer-edition of Mot Målet-magazine. YWAM Norway´s magazine. I had to work most of the weekend to get it done before the deadline. I am looking forward to "walk-out" some days these coming weeks. Then, there will be a summer-holiday for me this year too.
The children´s magazine has been sent to the printer about a week ago, and we expect that it will come in the next few days. It has been a year and a half ago since Chris and me started planning it. It had been shelved for a while, but we got to finish it in the last five months. I had posted the drawing for the cover before, but here is the cover that we ended up with.
Down here are two extra sheets with Car-bingo for everyone to download and print. The bingo´s are designed for the norwegian roads, but they might work in your country too. Enjoy your summer together!

Koffie cursus / Coffee course

On Monday I attended a coffee-course, at the cafe I work on tuesdays.
I already knew a lot about how to make a espresso´s,
but to it was very good to get two hours to learn how to do it for real.

Here is how you are supposed to press the coffee in the filter.
Runar, the instructor told that some full-time barista´s end up with wrist-problems.
Me no like that, me like to keep my wrists good.
I like to enjoy making coffee´s and illustrations even when I´m really old.

Ik heb een "vette baantjes verzameling". Momenteel in de verzameling: illustrateur / grafisch vormgever en barista (iemand die espresso´s maakt).
I probeer de baantjes gescheiden te houden. Maar wanneer het rustig is in het café, ga ik nog wel eens met mijn dikke blauwe tekenboek in een hoekje zitten. Dit boek heb ik sinds het begin van vorig jaar. Ik ben niet zo´n verslaafd tekenaar als anderen. Het gebeurt vaak dat ik een paar dagen niet teken. Met koffiie is dat anders.
Net als de meeste Illustrateurs, ben ik een berucht koffie drinker (een beetje verslaafd). Aan het begin van mijn werkdag maak ik een liter koffie, en die drinken we met ons tweeën op voor het lunch is. Na de lunch drink ik geen koffie meer.
Dus, gister had ik een koffie-cursus van het café waar ik dinsdags werk, dat was leuk. Het was goed om dit eindelijk eens gedaan te hebben, nu ik al anderhalf jaar in de café werk. Net zo lang als ik mijn blauwe tekenboek heb.

I have a collection of fancy jobs. Currently in my collection are: iIllustrator, graphic designer and barista.
I am trying to keep them separated. But when the cafe is quiet, I will usually take the chance to doodle a bit. I still carrying the same big blue sketchbook with me that I started drawing in at the beginning of last year. I am not as addicted doodler as I read about others. I can go days without making a drawing. That is different with coffee. Like most illustrators / graphic designers, I am a notorious coffee drinker. I make a liter of coffee in the morning, with lasts until lunch with Anita and me. Since a month or so have I stopped drinking coffee after lunch, that has not given me problems.
So, yesterday I had a coffee-course at the cafe I work on tuesdays, It was good to finally have done this after one and a half year. As long as I have had the blue sketchbook.

I still find it weird that this is the kind of things I do for work.
Even weirder, that I often end up making things that look so light and cute.
These were on my drawing board today,
I´m not sure if I will use them for something actually.

We zijn al weer een week bezig met de nieuwe uitgave van het YWAM-magazine Mot Målet, en het kinderblad is nog steeds niet naar de drukker gestuurd.

En zo zal nog vaak gaan wanneer we samen aan zulke projecten blijven werken. Liever niet, maar we proberen het samen zo goed mogelijk te plannen. Terwijl ik nu met Mot Målet werk probeer ik de afwikkeling van het kinderblad er zo goed mogelijk bij naast te doen. Zo zal ik nog een paar pagina's met auto-bingo maken die vanaf Chris en Øystein's website te downloaden zijn. Ik kan t.z.t wel een linkje sturen.

Ik zie nu dat mijn werk er beter is uitgekomen, wanneer er anderen naar gekeken hebben en er hun mening op gegeven hebben. Met mijn geschreven noors doe ik dat zowiezo, dat zit vol met fouten, daar weet ik dat ik de anderen nodig heb.

Het vergt wel energie om je uitgewerkte ideeen terug naar de tekentafel te nemen, om ze opnieuw en beter te maken. Maar het is goed om te zien dat het het wel waard was wanneer het uiteindelijke resultaat dan ook duidelijk beter is. Het blijft een spannend proces om te beslissen waar we nog tijd voor hebben en welke verandering het waard zijn om door te voeren. En omdat het proces telkens anders is komt het aan op wederzijds respect en vertrouwen in elkaars vakmanschap.

Bij spelling en zinsbouw zijn de regels behoorlijk aboluut, en de meesten zijn er goed mee bekend. Bij tekeningen en layout is dat een stuk relatiever, en zijn ook de "regels" niet voor iedereen zo duidelijk en bekend. Dan is de feedback meer gefundeerd op hoe het ervaren word, en moet ik van mijn kant nog wel eens uitleggen wat en waarom ik gedaan heb. Om over mijn eigen ideeen te praten is ook een goede oefening om er nog eens bij stil te staan.

Het heeft veel geholpen om vaak een paar kinderen naar ons blad te laten kijken, om te zien of ze de activiteiten snappen. We zouden dit in de toekomst vaker moetten doen. Wanneer je met z'n allen zo dicht bij een project als dit betrokken bent, kijk je al gauw een paar dingen over het hoofd. Ook tijdens het maken van het blad zijn er per ongeluk een paar fouten in gekomen. Dat is jammer, en slordig.

We are already one week into making the new YWAM-magazine Mot Målet, and the children's magazine has still not been sent to the printer.

And that is how it often happens. Rather not, but we try to organize our projects as well as possible. So, while I work on Mot Målet we will try to wrap up the children's magazine as well as possible. One thing is that I am still going to make some more sheets of car-bingo that can be downloaded form Chris and Øystein's website. I will probably give the link when we have put it out.

I can see that my work has come out a lot better after others have taken a look at it, and come with their suggestions. My written norwegian is still full of mistakes, and I definately need someone to look over that.

It takes some energy when I have to take my finished drawing back to the drawing board, and work them out again. But it's worth it when I have seen that the final result is significantly better. It is an exciting process to decide what we have time for, and what changes we still can make before the deadline. And because these processes will always be different, I think in the end it will come down to mutual respect and trust that the others are doing their best.

The rules of grammar and spelling are quite absolute and well known by most people. With drawings and design, the "rules" are a bit more relative and not so well known by everyone. Mostly the feedback is based on how it is experienced. Usually I still have to give some explanation what and why I have done. Having to talk about my work is a good exsecise to rethink what I have been doing.

It has often been a great help to show some of the magazine to the children here. Even to see if they get the activities we have come up with. I would like to do this a lot more, the next time we do this. When we working so closely with a thing, it easily happens that we oversee something. And that would be too bad, and too sloppy.

De Noorse nationale feestdag van 2011 / The Norwegian national day of 2011

Today is the seventeenth of May, which is Norway´s national day, congratulations all norwegians.

For the first time in six years I got coerced to join them and see the children´s parade in a neighboring village.

Here we are on the lawn before the town-hall, with all the norwegians in their national costumes, called "Bunad".

Both the parade and the thing at the town-hall are a lot like what we usually have been doing in my hometown back in the Netherlands.

Here I am with two friends from the other hemisphere.

Together with the norwegians we wave little norwegian flags,

and sing songs about the fatherland.

I´m the tall guy in the un-ironed shirt.

This is a picture taken of the board game that is going to be in the coming children´s magazine.

We finished the whole magazine last night, around eight.

This evening, Joey (6) pointed out one thing that was wrong with this page, can you find it too?

Ja, dan was het weer de 17de Mei, en dat is de nationale feestdag hier in Noorwegen. En het word op ongeveer de zelfde wijze gevierd als koninginnedag bij ons. De dag begon om acht uur met het hijsen van de noorse vlag, en het zingen van een volkslied. Daarna hadden we een groot ontbijt met ongeveer honderd man.

De hele middag waren we in Løten om daar naar de optocht van de scholen te kijken, zoals we dat ook in Nederland doen. In Nederland zijn we veel uitbundiger, de liedjes die we zingen zijn feestliedjes. Noorwegen zijn ze traditioneler en er worden alleen volksliederen gezongen, of helemaal niet. In Nederland is er met koninginnedag overal gezong en muziek. In Noorwegen lopen ze stil in de optocht, er was deze keer maar één fanfare, en die liep voorop. Het mannenkoor dat meeliep zong bijna ondoorbroken "Hiep hiep Hoera".

De optocht ging naar het grote grasveld voor het dorpshuis, en daar hoorden we de fanfare, en de staatshistorische achtergrond van de nationale feestdag in de toespraak van een dame. Toen zongen we nog een volkslied en daarmee was de optocht afgelopen.

Toen naar de lagere school om ijs en worstjes en roombrei te eten. Ook werden er net als bij ons spelletjes gedaan, alhoewel het er niet zo georganiseerd aan toe ging als in Nederland. Voor ze met de spelletjes begonnen moest ik al weer verder, en voor de roombrei heb ik bedankt.

En nu ben ik behoorlijk gaar. Toen ik terug kwam heb ik nog twee uur staan Barbequen voor ongeveer honderd mensen. Gister hebben we eindelijk het kinderblad af kunnen maken, daar ben ik erg blij mee. Morgen begin ik weer met een nieuwe uitgave van Mot Målet. En dit alles bij elkaar is geen slecht begin van de week.

This night I finished almost all of the children´s magazine.
Just some coloring left for the comic, I can do that tomorrow.
So I started to take photo´s of myself while I was finishing up.

Sometimes I work standing for a while.
It is good to change your working position now and then.

For this shot I taped the camera to the lamp that is hanging over my drawing board.

Ik ben erg blij met hoe het komende kinderblad er uit begint te zien. Het is een uitdagend proces om met iets bezig te zijn waarvan je van tevoren niet weet hoe het er precies uit gaat zien. Ik bent tegelijkertijd bezig om de dingen te defineren en uit te voeren. Vaak gebeurt het dan dat ik tijdens de uitvoering mijn definities aan moet passen.
Het is vooral spannend om tijdens het proces te bedenken hoe het blad ontvangen zal worden door de kinderen en de ouders deze zomer.
Vaak heb ik bij mezelf gedacht: "Oh, dit blad zou ik graag willen hebben, wanneer ik het zo gekregen zou hebben."

I am very happy with how the coming children´s magazine is looking right now. Most of it is done. I find it a challenge to be working on something that I don´t know what it´s going to look like. We are both defining and creating this simultaneously. It has often happened that I have changed some of the definitions while I was creating it.
It is especially exciting to think of the children and their parents that are going to get the magazine this summer.
Often I how thought by myself: "Oh, I would really have liked this magazine for myself, if someone else had made it."

De laatste week voor het kinderblad / The final week for the children´s magazine

This is going to be on the cover for the children´s magazine that I´m working on.
Do as it says in the picture, put on your seatbelt and keep you arms and legs inside the vehicle.

And this is the sketch. I am pretty happy with it, as I don´t draw cars so often.
The color has been done digitally.

Nog een week en dan sturen we het kinderblad naar de printer. Zoals het er nu uit ziet ben ik er erg blij mee. Dat de tekening van de auto er zo goed uit kwam wat ik zelf behoorlijk verrast over. Het is niet zo vaak dat ik auto´s teken, en ik voel niet altijd dat het gaat zoals ik het wil.

Nu heb ik nog een drukke week voor de boeg, er is nog veel dat gedaan moet worden.

One week to go before we are going to send the children´s magazine to the printer. As it is starting to look now, I am pretty happy with it. I am quite surprised that the drawing for the cover page turned out so well. I don´t so confident at drawing cars.

There are still a lot of things to do, and I will have a busy week ahead.

That´s my new bicycle.
In front of the back of our house and under the window to my room.
Some had this bicycle standing in his garage for some years, and was happy to give it to me.
I am very happy too, to have my own bicycle now.

In exactly one week we have to be done with the whole children´s magazine, I hope we make it.

It´s spring time, the puddles have all gone, the trees are getting greener.
I went for a cross country bike-ride, and saw this cool sign.

Every week we pray for the world and for our missionaries,
I drew this when three different people did their prayer for one and the same person.
So often we pray according to our personalities, and for the thongs that matter to us.
But through the same Holy Spirit, and that should put us back on the same page.

Het was goed om even paasvakantie te hebben, maar nu ben ik een beetje uit m´n ritme.

Het gaat zo makkelijk om laat op te blijven en tot de middag uit te slapen.

Toen gister na elven het bezoek weg was, bedacht ik me opeens dat ik mijn blog nog niet voorbereid had.

Hier is een kleine tekening van een aantal weken geleden, ik had het gemaakt tijdens een gebedsbijeenkomt.

Het is zo gemakkelijk om altijd je tekenboek en potloden op tafel te leggen wanneer er een of ander vergadering is.

Dan heb ik altijd wat te doen, voor het geval…

Maar het is toch beter om je aandacht er bij te houden,

dus meestal blijft mijn tekenboek in mijn tas zitten.

Ik houd er ook niet van wanneer ze me op het papier zitten te kijken terwijl ik teken.

It was good to have a week of easter holiday, but I always get myself really out of rhythm.

It happens so easy to stay up late and sleep in til the afternoon.

Yesterday around eleven, when the visitors had left, I realized that I had not yet prepared the weekly blog.

So, here is a little drawing that I made some time a few weeks ago during one staff/prayer meeting.

It´s so easy just to put my drawing book and gear on the table at the start of every new meeting,

then I know I´ve got something to do, just in case…

But it´s better to keep paying attention,

most of the time the book and the gear stay in the bag.

And I really don´t like it when people look on my paper when I sit to draw.

Paaseieren zoeken / An Easter-egg hunt

Somewhere between all those owls, there lies hidden one Easter-egg, can you find it?

Wat een lawaai maken die kinderen, er is hier een paaskamp aan de gang. Ook in Noorwegen is het paasvakantie, en mijn werk voor YWAM ligt een weekje stil. Vandaag en donderdag werk ik nog wel in Café UNO.

Verder probeer ik een paar dingen voor elkaar te krijgen waar ik op een gewone werkweek niet zoveel tijd voor heb. Zoals het schrijven van nieuwsbrieven, en mezelf op de hoogte brengen van de noorse wetgeving aangaande mijn freelance-activiteiten.

En ik heb weer uilen zitten tekenen, en een ei.

We have a week of easter-holiday, and there is an easter-camp running at this place, that brings a lot of life. Everyone is happy that the sun is finally shining and that the snow is gone. Some Norwegians still would have liked to go skiing.

My work for the children´s magazine lies still for a week, but I am still working at Café UNO this week. I am actually expecting a lot of kids in the café today.

Now that I have holiday, I can do some things that I normally don´t have a lot of time for. For example, writing newsletters and reading up on Norwegian law concerning my freelance business.

And I have been drawing owls again, and one easter-egg.

Hedwig II

Ik was zo blij met de tekening van vorige week, dat ik er meer gemaakt heb. Hier zijn er twee. Mijn plan was om voor vandaag nog twee af te hebben, maar plotseling waren we met z´n allen de hele avond aan het meer (genaamd Mjøsa) met een kampvuurtje, dat was gezellig. Maar ik kwam er daarna niet aan toe om meerdere tekeningen te maken.

Voor mijn werk vandaag heb ik gisteren kleurplaten getekent. Komende woensdag heb ik Barista-cursus, waar ga leren hoe ik espresso´s en andere koffie-soorten moet maken. Daar heb ik zin in.

Het weer is er nu ook eindelijk naar dat ik op de fiets naar Hamer kan, en dat is lekker. Ik was zo blij dat ik weer kon fietsen, dat ik dit weekend spontaan kennissen in Hamar ben gaan bezoeken.

I just was so happy with the last drawing of the Snowy Owl, that I wanted to draw a few more. You are welcome. I had planned to finish two more drawings for this post, but instead I spent the evening at the nearby lake (called Mjøsa) with my friends around a campfire. We ate banana´s with molten chocolate and roasted marshmallows, we talked and sang until there was nothing left to keep the fire going.
For work this week, I have been drawing ducks and deer. On wednesday I will take a coffee-course and I then I can call myself a Barista. I am looking forward to this.

After I finished the paper owl,
I drew this picture of a Snowy Owl after a photograph.
I really like the «Thorgal» feel that it has to it.

Van de week las ik in mijn noorse vertaling van Genesis, dat de mensheid van God het «heers-recht» kreeg over alle planten en dieren. Wat dat nou precies betekent weet ik niet, maar toen ik na het eten een wandelingetje aan het maken was werd ik bijna door een fazant het pad af gejaagd. Mevrouw fazant zal wel ergens dichtbij platgedrukt op haar nest zitten.

De lente komt er nu echt door, er ligt hier en daar nog een beetje sneeuw, en vanmiddag zal ik voor het eerst week een vlinder.

Dit weekend heb ik het papieren model van de Sneeuwuil afgemaakt. Het model heb ik hier gedownload, en op twee keer de grootte uitgeprint. Christoffer (7) en ik willen nog een keer levensgrote papier-modellen maken van verschillende dieren. Een echte sneeuwuil kan tot zestig meter groeien, het papiermodel is maar vijfendertig centimeter.

Verder schieten we aardig op met het kinderblad. We hebben besloten om van zestien naar vierentwintig pagina´s te gaan. Dan hebben de kinderen wat meer om te doen. Er is één pagina waarvan we nog niet weten wat we er mee gaan doen. Maar daar vinden we uiteindelijk wel wat op.

After a few weeks I finally finished this paper model of a Snowy Owl.
Its head is fixed with a rubber band, so you can turn it.

Last week I was reading in Genesis that mankind had received dominion over all the animals and the plants, I am not certain what that means. But yesterday when I went for a walk, I got harassed by a pheasant. Very likely that it was trying to chase me away from its nest, somewhere nearby. Before the weekend we had some winterish weather, but now everything is back to spring. I even saw a butterfly today.

This weekend I finished a paper-model of a Snowy Owl. This is the place where I got it, and I printed it at double the size. Christoffer (7) and me are planning to make life-size paper models of some animals some day. A real Snowy Owl can grow to sixty centimeters, my paper-model is only thirty-five centimeters.

And the children´s magazine is getting better and better, it is fun to be able to draw the whole week. We have decided to go from sixteen to twenty four pages. All the pages have been designated some activity, except one. But it will have some good purpose by the time we are done.

Laarzen-week / Oh puddles!

It´s still not easy to get my face to look consistently the same.

Ook hier in Noorwegen stijgt de temperatuur al weer langzaam, en de halve meter sneeuw van het afgelopen half jaar begin nu eindelijk te smelten. Dan is het overal nat en drapperig. Wanneer je hier en daar al weer op het grint en het asfalt kan lopen is het tijd om je laarzen uit de kast te halen.

Na het eten loop ik vaak een rondje van een uur, de hele winter stil zitten is ook niks.

Hopeljk is het met een week weer weg.

Komende maandag is de deadline voor Mot Målet nr. 2 voor dit jaar. De afgelopne weken hebben Kristian en Anita daar aan gewerkt, terwijl ik aan het kinderblad werkte. Nu ben ik in de laatste week alles aan het verzamelen en tot een goed einde brengen.

Het is interessant om te zien om drie verschillende stijlen van vormgeving in één blad te zien. We zijn benieuwd.

I have been going for walks again after dinner, the walks take about an hour.

I hope I don´t have to slush around in my boots for more than a week.

Next Monday we will send this year´s second issue of Mot Målet magazine to the printer. The last weeks, Kristian and Anita have been working on that, while I worked on the children´s magazine for the summer. This coming week I will collect all their work and tie it nicely together.

It will be interesting to seen our three different styles of magazine-design come together in this one magazine. We are all excited.

Kolonisten-Poster / Settlers-Poster

Eindelijk heb ik mijn éénmansbedrijf bij de Noorse Kamer van Koophandel weten te registreren. Nu sta ik officieel voor een éénmanszaak. Deze week kwamen er een aantal brieven binnen met moeiljk Noors over het regelwerk en de wetten rond mijn nieuwe bedrijfje. In vind het allemaal nogal indrukwekkend, en zal mijn best doen om alles in de komende weken onder de knie te krijgen. Gelukkig dat er hier een paar mensen zijn die bedrijfsadministratie gestudeerd hebben.

Ik vind het tegelijk spannend en eng om te denken dat ik nu "echte freelancer" aan het worden ben. Voor de eerste komende jaren verwacht ik dat ik bij YWAM zal blijven werken, en sporadisch een opdracht zal kunnen doen. In de eerste plaats is het mij er om dat ik nu de mogelijkheid heb om wat freelance te kunnen werken.

Een week geleden is er hier een nieuwe DTS (bijbel en zendings-school) begonnen. Deze keer hebben we een erg gevarieerde groep studenten. Ze komen uit elf verschillende landen, en varieren in leeftijd van vierentwintig tot achtenzestig. Ik was gevraagd om een poster/kalender voor de school te maken zodat de rest van de mensen die hier werken, mee kunnen volgen en mee kunnen bidden.

Om het een beetje leuk en anders te doen heb ik de weken verdeeld over deze zeskantige Kolonisten-tegels. Momenteel wacht ik nog op een groepsfoto. Hierboven kun je een speelveld zien met alle verschillende landtegels.

Omdat ik maar drie dagen in de week met tekenen en design bezig ben heb ik steeds het gevoel dat ik zo weinig af krijg. Nu ben ik met meerdere dingen tegelijk bezig, in plaats van maar één project. Ik moet er nog een beetje aan wennen.

Finally, I am approved and registered as a freelance illustrator and designer. For the last months I had been in misunderstanding about their mailing system. But once I got behind that, the approval was in within a few days. And a few days after that came a number of papers with laws and regulations that come with having a one-man business. All of them in difficult Norwegian. I have good faith that the people from the accountancy office can help me with this.

I find it an exciting and scary thought to have become a "real freelancer". I expect to keep working full-time with YWAM in the coming years, and only sporadically be able to take some freelance work. For now I got myself registered to be able to take freelance work.

Last week a new DTS (Bible and Missions-school) started here at our place. This time there is a big variety in the student group. We have people from eleven countries and between age twenty-four and sixty-eight.

I got asked to make a Poster/Calender for the time they here for their lectures. The poster is for us other people, so we can follow what they are doing and pray for them.

To fun-up the poster I have used these hexagonal Settlers of Catan-tiles instead of straight calenderish boxes. I am waiting for a new group photo to finish the poster. I made you guys a whole Settlers game set-up to show off the different tiles.

Now I only work three days a week with illustration and design, and I have the constant feeling that I am not getting enough done. Now I am working with several things at the time in stead of one longer project. I am trying to get used to it.

Op het eind heb ik de lijn tussen de baard en de lepel weg gehaald, die was te storend. In plaats daarvan heb ik een witte cirkel getekent. Ook heb ik de meeste dingen een donkerdere schaduw gegeven.

Ik had gehoord dat er mensen waren die zich afvroegen of ze meer te weten konden komen over hoe ik mijn tekeningen maak. Dit weekend heb ik een paar uur met een uitleg bezig geweest. Alsjeblieft:

De meeste tekeningen schets ik eerst met potlood. Ik wilde iets tekenen dat met pannenkoeken bakken te maken had. Ik begon met het hoofd en toen de armen, de baard en de rest van het lichaam. Toen alles af was heb ik de eierschalen, appelstukjes en speklapjes er bij geteken, voor de smaak.
Toen ik tevreden was met alle potloodschetsen heb ik het met een zwarte vulpen ingekleurd. Bij andere tekeningen heb ik het lijnwerk met kroontjes-pen of met penseel gedaan. Wanneer al het lijnwerk af is gum ik de potloodschetsen weg.

Dan scan ik de tekening, en het inkleuren doe ik met de computer.

Bij het digitaal tekenen en inkleuren gebruik ik een teken-bordje in plaats van een muis, hiermee kan ik stukken sneller en effectiever werken. Het jongentje op mijn scherm is mijn neefje Ties.

Van de gescande tekening maak ik een bestand dat uit meerdere laagjes bestaat. In de rechter beneden-hoek zie je een rijtje met vijf grijze en één wit vlakjes, dat is mijn overzicht over alle lagen. De lijnen van de tekening komen in één laag (de tweede op het plaatje). De laag er boven ga ik aan het eind gebruiken om de lijnen in te kleuren. Onder de laag met de lijnen maak ik een aantal mapjes met lagen om de verschillende onderdelen van de tekening in te kleuren. De onderste laag is de achtergrond, en op dit plaatje is die nog wit.

Wanneer ik het aantal laagjes ingepland heb, bedenk ik wat voor kleuren ik in de tekening wil hebben. Meestal ga ik in het begin alle kanten op met de kleuren en op het eind pas ik ze een beetje aan zodat de tekening er als een geheel uit komt te zien. Ik gebruik graag veel verschillende kleuren.
Ik heb de tekening in een paar verschillende onderdelen mappen, namelijk: Het mannetje, het deeg en een laag met details. De map met de details heeft twee lagen, eén met de ingredienten en één met andere details.
Na de achtergrond kleur ik alle onderdelen netjes in binnen de lijntjes, hier gaat altijd veel tijd in zitten.

De reden dat ik alle lagen voor zich in kleur is dat ik ze daarna "op slot" zet, hiermee zorg ik er voor dat ik niet meer buiten de lijntjes kom te kleuren. Ik hoef nu niet meer zo voorzichtig te zijn en kan sneller werken.
Nu kleur ik alle onderdelen één voor één in. Ondertussen heb mannetje onderverdeeld in drie lagen: huid, haar en kleren. Dat werkte wat makkelijker.

Hier heb ik alle verschillende onderdelen van de tekening ingekleurd. Nadat ik daar klaar mee was heb ik de achtergeond een andere kleur gegeven. Ondertussen heb ik al naar drie preken via de podcast zitten luisteren.

Om de tekening wat "zachter" te maken, ga ik nu alle zwarte lijnen kleuren. Hierbij heb ik weer de laag met de lijnen "op slot" gezet, zodat ik letterlijk niet buiten de lijntjes kan kleuren. Op dit plaatje heb ik alleen nog de lijnen van de ingredienten en het deeg ingekleurd.

Nu zijn bijna alle lijnen ingekleurd. De tekening ziet er meteen een stuk zachter uit. De dikke lijn van de lepel naar de baard heb ik wit gemaakt, om hem minder in het oog te laten springen. Ook heb ik wat meer leven in de achtergrond gebracht.

Auto-Bingo / Road trip-Bingo

A very easy game to keep the kids occupied during a long road-trip.

Ok, ik ben begonnen om minder met tekenen en design te werken, om uiteindelijk niet oververmoeid te raken. Ik weet dat ik erg graag met mijn werk en hobby bezig ben, en dat het veel tijd in beslag kan nemen. Nu werk ik donderdags in de keuken. Hopelijk dat ik over een paar maand een rustiger ritme heb ontwikkelt.

De afgelopen weken ben ik met het langverwachte kinderblad bezig geweest. Hier is één van de activiteiten voor het blad. Auto-Bingo. Je kruist af wat je onderweg tegenkomt, en dan gaat het er om wie het éérste een BINGO kan score. behoorlijk simpel. Deze bingo-veldjes zijn aangepast aan de Noorse wegen.

Dit was een van de weinige keren dat ik waterverf gebruikt heb, Aan de rechter kant van mijn blog kun je naar mijn Flickr foto-site komen, en daar heb ik een foto van toen ik net klaar was met deze activiteit.

So, I have actually started to work less with illustration and design. This is because I see the danger that I might get tired and overworked. I know I love my work and could easily spend all my time on it. One thing I have changed is that I work in the kitchen on thursdays. Hopefully it will get me to slow down over the next couple of months.

Last week I have worked at some activities for the long-expected Children´s magazine. This one here is Road-trip Bingo. Everyone in the car get´s one square and crosses off one of the items once they spot it, until someone gets a BINGO. Pretty simple. These squares are made for Norwegian roads.

This is one of the few times I have used watercolor for my work. To the right on my blog, you can see some photo´s of my Flickr photo-site. I put out one picture of when I just finished all the little items for this game.

Een sociaal weekje/ A week of socializing

Het werk gaat z´n gangetje. Nu we net met het kinderblad begonnen zijn, is alles nog in de schets-fase. Wanneer ik dingen af ga maken krijgen jullie wat meer te zien.

Eigenlijk ben ik de afgelopen week socialer geweest dan anders, hier is wat ik allemaal gedaan heb:

Maandag: Muffin-feestje bij de meiden op de derde verdiepeing, georganiseerd door Dina uit Denemakren.

Dinsdag: Net als elke dinsdag werk ik in het jeugdcafé in Hamar, daar ben ik dan van zes tot tien. Op een gegeven moment kwam Marius de illustrator voorbij, en hadden we samen mijn recente stripverhaal doorgenomen.

Woensdag: ´s Woensdags is bij ons het café open, en daar was ik een uurtje geweest voor ik naar huis ging om schoon te maken voor de volgende dag. In het café hadden we het over hoe we bij YWAM terecht gekomen waren, en hoe lang we dachtten om hier te blijven.

Donderdag: Audun was jarig en ´s avonds we hadden een verjaardags-feestje bij ons thuis. Met taart en koffie en snoep. Tegen het eind had ik snel even een portret voor hem getekent, een minuut na ik begon was hij al weer vergeten dat hij moest poseren.

Vrijdag: Niet veel sociaal, behalve dat ik met mijn ouders even op MSN gesproken heb. ´s Avonds heb ik een paar uur aan een verjaardagskaart gewerkt. Die moest de volgende dag af zijn.

Zaterdag: Uitslapen en verder niet veel bijzonders. Er was in het weekend een gebeds-conferentie gaande en hielp mee met de afwas (voor 300 mensen). ´s Avonds was ik op verjaadagsvisite bij Kristian tot ongeveer 01:30. Het meeste grafische vormgeving wat ik nu doe heb ik van hem geleerd. Naast grafisch vormgever is hij auteur van de fantasy-trilogie: Defenders of the Sign. Dit jaar zijn deze trilogie in het engels uitgekomen, hij had het er over dat ze misschien ook in het Nederlands vertaald zou worden. Telkens wanneer ik hem bezoek hebben we het er over dat ik een stripverhaal van zijn boek ga maken.

Zondag: Niet veel, tijdens de lunch zat ik tegenover een paar nonnen die hier voor de conferentie waren. Het bleek dat twee van hun ook met grafisch vormgeving werkten, en toen volgde een technisch gesprek over computer-programma´s met deze zuster in lichtbruine habijten. Erg contastvol.

Work is going steady, we are in the start-up of the children´s magazine so most of the things are still in the sketch phase. You´ll get to see some more of that project once I start to finish things.

I have actually been very social since the last post, here are some of the things I have been doing after work last week:

Monday: Muffin-party in the kitchen on the third floor, organized by Dina from Denmark.

Tuesday: like every Tuesday, I am working at a café for youth in the city. I work there from 18:00 til 22:00. Marius a Illustrator friend dropped by at one point and we discussed my recent comic together.

Wednesday: On wednesday´s the café at our place is open. And I was hanging there for an little while before I went home to clean the house for the party the next day. That evening in the café we talked about why we had come to work with YWAM and how long we thought we would be doing this.

Thursday: Audun´s birthday party, at our place. With cake and coffee and candies and lots of people all crammed in our little kitchen. Towards the end I drew a portrait for him, one minute in the process he forgot he was posing.

Friday: Nothing social, I chatted with my parents over MSN I think. And I used a couple of hours to draw a birthday card for someone I was visiting the next day.

Saturday: Sleep in and I used an hour looking for something good to write on the birthday card, but didn´t find something. I had to do dishes for about 300 people that were on the conference that was going on here that weekend. After the dishes I visited my friend Kristian Kapelrud for his birthday. We played a fun game, can´t remember the last time I laughed so hard. left them around 01:30. Kristian worked with the magazine before me and has taught me most of what I know about graphic design. He is the author of the fantasy trilogy: The Defenders of the Sign. Every time I visit him we end up talking about me making a comic adaption of his books.

Sunday: Not much, During lunchI sat across a few nuns that were here for the conference, we chatted a bit and it happened that two of them were working with graphic design too, then we had a very technical conversation about computer-programs, me and the ladies in light-brown habits. Very contrast-full.

Herstart van het kinderblad / Restarting the children´s magazine

Here I am almost done with all the sketches, just the last panel to do.

Het is fijn om af en toe je kantoor es op te ruimen. Nadat het kantoor op orde was heb ik de harde schijf van mijn computer ook maar opgeruimd en dingen gearchiveerd. Ik heb 40 Giga-byte vrij kunnen maken. Ik ben niet helemaal zeker of deze kantoor-opstelling helemaal ideaal is, maar het is snel veranderd.

Momenteel ben ik aan het strip-tekenen. En dat is is voor het kinderblad waar we meer als een jaar geleden aan begonnen zijn. Door omstandigheden is het blad toen stil gelegd, maar nu zijn we er eindelijk weer mee bezig. Gister heb ik de hele dag met het stripverhaal kunnen werken, en dat was lekker. Ik merk dat ik er weer in moet komen. Nadat de schetsen voor de strip af zijn, laten we het aan de kinderen hier zien. Als die het "goedgekeurd" hebben ga ik de strip helemaal afmaken.

Nu ik een jaar met Mot Målet gewerkt heb, begin ik ook meer overzicht te krijgen over wat voor layout ik wil voor de strip. Stripverhalen maken is zoveel meer als pagina´s met tekeningen. Arne-Christian, de redacteur voor dit blad heeft veel ervaring met boeken en blad maken, en het is erg leerzaam om met hem te werken.

It´s nice to clean your office from time to time. After I was done with the office, I cleaned and archived the files on my hard-drive. I was able to free up about 40 Giga-byte. I am not sure if our current office set-up is the best, but we just have to see, and it is easily changed.

I am drawing comics at the moment. And that´s for the children´s magazine we started to develop more than a year ago. That project got put on the shelf for about half a year, but now it´s back on my drawing-board. I spent the whole day yesterday to hand-letter and sketch out the comic. When the sketches and text are done, we will show it to the children here and see what they think. If they "approve" of it I will make it in full-color.

After having worked with Mot Målet for a year, I have gotten a better overview of how I want to do the page-layout for the comic. Arne-Christian, the editor for this magazine has a lot of experience both books and magazines, and it´s to work with him.

Kantoor herinrichten / Office makeover

Hans Christian from the University of the Nation came through our office a few times,
It´s him and his stripey sweater on the wall.

En we zijn weer klaar met de eerste uitgave van Mot Målet voor het jaar 2011. Deze keer hebben we het in drie weken gedaan. We hebben het ritme er goed in kunnen houden. Op de laatste dag kwamen er nog drastische veranderingen binnen, en dat is altijd een beetje frustrerend. En soms kun je er weinig aan doen.

Ik voel nu dat ik zo goed in het bladen maken zit dat ik alle kommentaar en kritiek opgeschreven en verwerkt heb. Voor de volgende keren. Als ik het gelijk in het begin zoveel aandacht aan correctie en kritiek besteed had zou ik me het bladen maken niet zo snel eigen gemaakt hebben.

Zo is het denk ik met veel creatieve processen, dat in het begin de aanmoedigingen belangrijker zijn als de kritiek. En wanneer je er wat in gegroeid ben, is het goed om er een paar rondjes kritiek bij nemen, maar niet eerder.

Ik merk dat ik ook niet meer zo uitgeput ben wanneer we na drie weken eindelijk klaar zijn met het blad. Ja, en de anderen waren ook tevreden met het blad.

Vandaag hebben we veel oude dingen uit het kantoor geruimd, en hebben mijn tekentafel er in gezet. Tot medio Mei zal ik veel gaan zitten teken voor het kinderblad. Dat word leuk. Morgen gaan we verder met opruimen en inruimen.

Look how busy we have been, refurbishing our basement office. Or rather, moving out books and magazines, closets and a couch. And after half a year, I am reunited with my drawing-board.

The files for the magazine have been sent to the printer last evening and today approved the check the sent up before they start printing.

I saved all the comments and critique that I got during the three weeks I set the magazine. Before I have spent my energy to get good at making the magazines and focussed on learning how to. Now I feel I am routined enough to take time to work the critiques into my work.

I think it is like this with many creative people. In the begin their learning process, the encouragements are more important than the critique, limitations can kill the creative development and learning curve in the early stage.

And every person it different in this, we all learn a bit different, and process and create differently.

I would let every person decide their own pace, keep on encouraging and give good feedback. And perhaps try to get an overview of where they are in a process.

Een volkshogeschool bezocht / visiting a Folk Highschool

when we drove to and from Hurdal.

Afgelopen zondag ben ik weer eens op "team-tour" gegaan. Het afgelopen jaar heb ik erg veel binnen gezeten en met illustratie en design gewerkt. Het was goed om er weer eens uit te komen.

We zijn met z´n drieen naar een "folkehøyskole" (volkshogeschool) gegaan en hebben daar over DTS verteld. DTS is de bijbel- en zendings-school van onze organisatie. Eigenlijk was het de bedoeling dat Trond van de familie-afdeling er heen zou gaan om een praatje te houden over relaties en samenwonen. Helaas werd Trond ziek, en hebben wij met ons drieën het iniatief genomen om er alsnog heen te gaan.

Een folkehøyskole is "een examenloze school waar de studenten in een internaat wonen"

Het idee achter zulke scholen is onder andere dat leren in de eerste plaats niet uit huiswerk, repetietie en theorie moet bestaan. Vooral wanneer het weinig met het dagelijkse leven van de studenten te maken heeft. Deze scholen-beweging is in 1844 in Denemarken begonnen en leeft sterk in Noorwegen. Ook in Nederland zijn er Volkshogescholen.

Veel van deze hogescholen hebben speciale vakken die je in dat jaar kunt volgen. Een paar maand geleden kwam ik te horen dat er nu ook een volkshogeschool is dat striptekenen als vak aanbiedt. 30 van de 78 de scholen zijn "Chirstelijk"

De volkshogeschool die wij bezochtten lag tussen Hamar en Oslo en heet Hurdal Verk, een christelijke volkshogeschool.

We waren uitgenodigd voor hun zondagavond-bijeenkomst. We hadden bij elkaar een half uurtje waar we vertelde wat God voor ons betekent en over ons leven als christen. Heel kort vertelden we ook over DTS. Na de bijeenkomt zaten we nog wat te praten met de jongeren. Ik kwam aan de praat met een meisje uit Belgie en die op die school was voor een "gap-year", Ik vertelde hoe ik hier terecht gekomen was en wat ik nu deed. Daarna praatte ik nog met een Nederlandse jongen, die vond het één groot feest-jaar. We waren snel uitgepraat.

Het was wel weer lekker om er eens weer uit geweest te zijn. En om aan anderen te kunnen vertellen over wat God allemaal gedaan heeft in onze levens.

Last Sunday I visited one of the 78 Folk-Highschools of Norway together with two other staff. It has been a long time since I have been on a team-trip. It was good to be on the road again.

We went to this Folk Highschool to talk about DTS and about God. DTS is the bible and missions-school of our organisation YWAM. God is... Awesome!

The idea was that Trond from the family-department would go there and have a talk about relationships and cohabitation. Trond got sick, so three of us went instead and prepared a talk on the way.

The Folk-Highschool we visited lies between Hamar and Oslo and is called Hurdal Verk. It is one of the 30 Folk-Highschools in Norway.

On their Sunday-evening meeting we talked about God and our lives as christians, and we explained about DTS. After the talk we hang a bit with the youth there. Over coffee and Svele (Norwegian pancakes) I had a long chat with a girl from Belgia. She had gone there for a "gap-year", it seemed she enjoyed getting away from all the stress in Belgium. I told of how I came to Norway way, what I have been doing and what I am doing now. And we talked about cultural difference between Norway and our home-countries.

Then I met a boy from the Netherlands who thought the whole Folk-Highschool was just a big party-year, we didn´talk long.

It was good to be out on tour again and share with others about what God has been doing in our lives.

Gezichtsuitdrukingen / Facial Expressions

Deze tekeningen horen bij een artikel over Mozes en de Israelieten die de Rode Zee over gaan. Het artikel is voor Mot Målet. Het werk gaat een beetje langzamer als ik verwacht had.

First Mot Målet for 2011

Nothing says Coffee-addiction like and empty cup.

Jepp, de roll-up´s van vorige week zijn gearriveerd. Ik heb even op de middelste gekeken, om te zien hoe mijn tekening er uitziet op twee-meter formaat. De drie paketten waren aan mij geadresseerd, en de accountant was hier gister met de rekening. Gelukkig dat ik die niet hoef te betalen, ik heb anders genoeg te doen.

Mot Målet bijvoorbeeld. Deze week zijn begonnen met het zetten van de eerste editie vor dit jaar. Dit hopen we in drie weken af te hebben. Op de maandagen, woensdagen en vrijdagen zal ik proberen om 4 pagina´s te zetten. En dan samen met Anita op dinsdag en donderdag pagina´s zetten. Zij heeft het nog niet eerder gedaan, dan doen we het langzamer aan.

En dan komen er altijd dingen tussendoor. Hele vorige week had ik gepland om met de kinderpagina´s bezig te zijn. Uiteindelijk heb ik het mezelf een beetje moeilijk gemaakt. En met alle onderbrekingen is het nu nog niet af.

Ik ben nu klaar met mijn artikel over mijn gezondheidsproblemen en wat het met mijn geloof gedaan heeft. Dat heeft nog behoorlijk wat tijd opgenomen. Je kunt er meer over lezen wanneer je helemaalterug klikt naar het begin van mijn blog.

Nu is mijn huid erg netjes, ´s ochtends kan het nog wat droog zijn.

Yes, the roll-up´s for Austria have arrived last week, and I took a peek at the middle one. Cool to see a drawing of mine all big and blown up. The things came on my name, so our accountant presented the bill to me today. Good thing I don´t have to pay for those things. I have enough other responsibilities.

Like making Mot Målet for example. This week we started the first issue for this year, we have set three weeks to get done with it. On mondays, wednesdays and fridays I will try to set 4 pages by myself. On tuesday and thursday I will set some pages together with Anita, who has not done this before.

Then there are always some other things that come up and I have to spend time on. The whole of last week, I had planned to spend on making children´s pages about a bible story. I ended up making a very complex puzzle, and with all disturbances I am still not done.

I finished writing an article about my chronic health problems and what this has done with my faith. That project also took up some time. You can read about it all the way at the beginning of my blog, and in some recent posts.

Now, my health is doing real fine, just a little dry in my face sometimes.

Ja vorige week was ik behoorlijk druk de hele week, en helemaal afgelopen Dinsdag. In plaats dat ik er bovenop jullie nog een blog ben gaan schrijven heb ik een weekje geskipt, dit is waar ik mee bezig geweest ben:

Voor YWAM Oosterrijk heb ik drie display roll-up´s ontworpen (zie plaatje), dat zijn van die promotie dingen die je twee meter omhoog kan rollen, en achter je stand kan zetten. YWAM is aan het herstarten in Oosterrijk, en ze kunnen wel wat promo gebruiken. De roll-up´s worden in Noorwegen gemaakt, ik hoop ze hier nog te zien voor ze naar Oosterrijk gaan.

Tegen het eind van de week heb ik een artikel geschreven over hoe mijn gezondheids-problemen mij dichter bij God gebracht hebben. Uit mezelf zou ik er niet over beginnen, maar ik doe het in verband met thema-nummer "Crisis" van Mot Målet, ons YWAM-blad. Nu heb ik het eerst in het Engels geschreven, en tzt. komt er een Nederlandse vertaling.

Ten derde hebben we eindelijk de eerste echte vergadering gehad voor het Kinderblad waar ik een hele tijd geleden aan begonnen ben. Vandaag hebben we er weer een vergadering over. Ik moet zeggen dat ik weer aan het "kinderblad" moet wennen en er nog niet helemaal in ben. Het heeft een half jaar in de kast gelegen. Dit betekent dat ik de komende vijf maanden erg veel ga tekenen.

Deze week ben ik nog bezig met de kinderpagina´s voor de eerste editie van Mot Målet van dit jaar, gister heb ik de outline zitten bedenken.

Yes, so last week has been very busy, and I skipped posting on my blog for one week. This is what I have been doing:

For YWAM Austria I made three display roll-up´s (see picture) Each of them are two meters tall and will be a big help for the YWAM-ers to restart their work in Austria. The display´s will first be sent to us in Norway. I hope to get a look at then before we send them on.

Towards the end of last week I wrote an article about how my health problems have influenced my faith and my view on God. This is not something I would do of myself. But now I took the opportunity to write it for the theme-issue "Crisis" of Mot Målet. I wrote it in English, someone will translate it into Norwegian. I can´t express myself as well in Norwegian as in English or Dutch.

Thirdly, did we finally have a project meeting about the Children´s magazine that we started a long time ago. Today there will be another, more concrete meeting. I am happy we are finally moving forward with this. The project has been on the shelf for the last half a year, and I have need some time to get into it again.

This also means that I will be doing a lot of comics and activities in the next five months.

This week I will be making the children´s pages for the next issue of Mot Målet, I finished the outline on Monday.

This week I have to work in the kitchen a bit, making breakfast for 350+ people

Allereerst nog een gelukkig nieuwjaar iedereen, ik hoop dat jullie een goede jaarwisseling gehad heben. Ook in het nieuwe jaar ga ik lekker door met bloggen. Juliie krijgen elke dinsdag een tekening te zien die ik voor mijn werk of voor mezelf gemaakt heb. En ik schrijf kort wat ik de afgelopen week gedaan heb. Soms hebben de tekening en de tekst met elkaar te maken, en soms niet.

Voor de kerst had ik het bijbels dagboekje voor 2011, en nu we al vier dagen in het nieuwe jaar zijn heb ik het al een beetje kunnen gebruiken. Ik wilde graag een dagboekje hebben zodat ik makkelijker mijn dagelijkse stukje bijbel kan verwerken. Vorig jaar probeerde ik elke dag een stukje te lezen en er dan wat van te leren, maar dat was uiteindelijk een te los systeem.

In het verlangde hiervan bedacht ik de afgelopen week dat het goed zou zijn als ik ook een aantal andere input-bronnen zou aanpassen. Zo zit ik voor mijn werk de hele tijd achter de computer en daar zijn er zoveel sites waar ik me graag door laat inspireren. Toch merk ik dat ik helemaal niet de tijd neem om al de inspiratie te verwerken, om er iets mee te doen. Net als met het bijbel lezen is het vaak dat ik er alleen maar door lees, ipv. het me eigen maak.

Er is een giga-aanbod aan allemaal leuke en leerzame dingen, maar ik kan echt maar met één ding te gelijk bezig zijn. Ik heb vierentwintig uur in één dag, en op sommige van die dagen heb ik deadlines.

Mijn voornemen is om de goede keuzes te maken, ik kan niet alles doen, ik heb niet overal de tijd voor. Net als de tekening hierboven, het is te veel om voor één ontbijt alle brood en alle beleg te nemen. Voor mijn bijbel lezen heb ik er voor gekozen om het bijbelse dagboekje te gebruiken, dan weet ik dat ik opweg geholpen word, ipv. dat ik elke dag de bijbelstudie zelf moet verzinnen. Hoe ik het voor mijn werk en mijn hobbies ga doen weet ik nog niet helemaal.

More and more things have become like a extensive buffet, there are so many good and fun things to do and be part of. I have a number of sites I like to visit in relation to my work as a graphic designer, but it usually stays with being inspired, and I don´t do anything with the illustrations I am looking at.

I have becoming more relaxed in having to be inspired all the time and I rather want to prioritize doing something with it and getting something out of it.
