Wat ik nog nooit gedaan of geleerd heb / Things I never done or learned before

Vorige week ben ik er echt niet aan toe gekomen om jullie wat te schrijven. We zaten in de laatste week om Mot Målet te maken. Deze keer was ik verantwoordelijk als grafisch vormgever. Van het weekend zijn we met het team op een kinderwerker conferentie geweest. Helaas zonder Chris, hij is met ziekteverlof.

We hebben Mot Målet af gekregen, donderdagmiddag om 17:00 hebben we het bestand naar de drukker gestuurd. Het is een intens proces geweest, waarbij ik ook weer veel geleerd heb. Ik voel me niet absoluut tevreden over het resultaat, maar aan de andere kan weet ik heel goed dat ik het goed gedaan heb voor iemand met zo weinig training en ervaring. Tevreden zijn komt nog niet altijd vanzelf.

Bij het maken van de vorige Mot Målet heb ik de meeste tijd gebruikt om te leren over tekst en foto´s. De tekst moet duidelijk leesbaar zijn en het moet allemaal logisch in elkaar zitten. Alle tekst moet "in vlucht" liggen. De foto´d moeten altijd een beetje veranderd worden, een digitale foto bestaat uit drie kleuren (RGB) en een foto voor druk moet in vier kleuren (CMYK) zijn. Deze dingen had ik aardig onder controle.

Een ding waar ik deze keer tegenaan liep was bijvoorbeeld dat ik erg weinig gedacht had om naast tekst en foto´s ook wat met de achtergrond te doen. Om op een andere manier de pagina´s aantrekkelijk te maken. Niet dat ik het niet wilde, maar dat ik niet zo goed wist wat pastte of wat de moglijkheden waren.

Een andere denk-fout die ik een paar keer maakte is dat ik een beetje ver-gezochte of kunstige visualisatie zocht voor een paar van de artikelen. Dit gebeurde wanneer ik mijn ideeen bouwde op dingen die een beetje verborgen liggen in de tekst, en niet helemaal gelijk duidelijk naar voren komen. Soms is dit nodig om clichés te vermijden.
De volgende keer zal ik proberen om de verbinding in de eerste plaats te leggen met het thema of de titel van het artikel.

Ook ben ik gaan zien hoe ik een christelijke instelling kan (en moet) hebben als grafisch vormgever. Mijn werk is om onze organisatie, het blad, de schrijvers en hun alrtikelen op een aantrekkelijke en duidelijke manier te presenteren. Het is soms erg verleidelijk om de dingen op mijn eigen manier te presenteren. Om de dingen op een manier te presenteren die ik belangrijk vindt. Maar eigenlijk is het dat ik de een "dienende" rol heb ik hoe ik de zaken presenteer. Ik denk hierbij in de lijn van wat er aan het begin van hoofdstuk twee van Filipenzen staat.

Last week I really did not have time to write you a post. I was right in the middle of the last week of making Mot Målet. This time I was responsible as the "Art Director". This weekend we have been in Oslo with the team at a children´s worker conference, Sadly without Chris our project leader, he is on sick-leave.

We got done with Mot Målet, Thursday at 17:00 we sent the files to the printing house. It has been a intense process, and again I have learned a lot. I am not totally satisfied with all the results, and on the other hand I know that I did a great job for someone with so little training and experience as I have. Being satisfied with my work still does not come natural to me.

While making Mot Målet last time I mostly learned about text and pictures. The text has to be clearly readible and it has to flow easily and be logically. All the text has to be "in flight". The photo´s usually have to be changed a bit. For example: a digital photo is made of three colors (RGB) and a photo for print has to be in four colors (CMYK). These things I can do pretty well.

A thing I ran into this time is that was not thinking a lot about background and other decoration. There was enough to think about for me with pictures and text, and decoration kind of got forgotten. I had not really been thinking about what I could be using for decoration, and what the possibilities were.

Another thing is that I have been coming with far-fetched solutions to visualize the articles, than they end up looking weird and artificial. This often happened then I went looking for something hidden in the text to illustrate the article. This does not have to be bad, I´d rather do this than to go into cliché ideas. For the next issue, I plan to get my ideas from the title or the "deck" and subtitles of the article.

Aswell I have started to see how to be a Graphic Designer in a Christian way. It is my job to clearly present our organisation (YWAM), the magazine (Mot Målet), our writers and their articles. The purpose of our organisation is "to know God, and make God known", this is what we want to do witht he magazine and that is what we ask people to write about. Sometimes it is very tempting to design the articles in a way that I think are nice. Actually, I have a serving role as the designer, finding ways how I best can present the writers and their articles. Now I am thinking in the line of what is written in the second chapter of Phillipians.
